SCUNTHORPE United are considering a move for their former midfielder Sam Togwell as boss Brian Laws looks to strengthen his options in the middle of the park.

But the Telegraph understands the hard-working 28-year-old, who left Glanford Park when his contract expired 18 months ago, is not the Iron’s preferred target as they attempt to dip back into the loan market.

But with Scunthorpe’s match against York City, which was due to have taken place a week on Sunday, postponed because of international call-ups, Laws is prepared to wait until next week if it means he gets his top targets.

“We are talking to several targets and we are waiting for phone calls,” Laws told the Telegraph.

“The teams of a couple of the managers I've spoken to were playing on Tuesday night so we’re waiting to get the green light.

“But because we’re talking about having a two-week break coming up, we’ve only got to get through one game.

“I fully appreciate we are now at full stretch and I will try to bring a playerPosted Image or two in. I’ll certainly do it in the next fortnight, that will definitely happen.

“There are good signs at this moment in time about their availability, it’s just getting a decision from the player and the manager - whether they will let them come and whether we can accommodate the financial side of it as well.

“However, if it doesn’t happen or the right player doesn’t come available from the targets we are after then I won’t just take anybody. I want the players we are actually after.”

Scunthorpe are likely to step up their initial enquiry about Togwell if they are unable to recruit their primary target.

Having been a virtual ever-present in League Two last season - he missed just the one match - the former Barnsley and Crystal Palace midfielder has found game time difficult to come by so far this term at a Spireites side that currently tops the table.

He ticks all the boxes for the sort of player Laws is on the lookout for – with the United manager seemingly keen to steer clear of unproven first-team talent.

“The whole midfield is our weakest area,” said the Iron boss.

“The four we’ve got out there are strong, but we can’t take another injury.

“It means we have to turn to square pegs going in round holes. That’s not ideal. But when you’ve only got a small squad, that’s what you do."

It's inevitable he'll go out at some stage I think but perhaps not just yet. I hope he gets a start next Tuesday.

If the management team think Ollie Banks is sufficient cover I can see him going out.
Guess I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue!

The most bizzare part of that story is that Scunthorpe York is postponed because of internationals

I'd kind of forgot we've still got Togwell, thought he did well the 2nd half of last season too. Always gonna be hard to displace Morsy though. Morsy does pick up a fair few bookings though.

i dont fancy ryan in a more attacking role,i think he is a deep seated playmaker who plays best when he has plenty of pitch infront of him, also he lacks a yard of pace, for me the obvious player to swap with roberts is oshea.
ITS NOT THE WINNING,ITS THE TAKING APART

Scunny have signed Donny midfielder Davis Syers on loan. I guess he was the 'first choice' Laws spoke of. Presumably that ends his interest in Togwell, for the timeneung at least.
