Indeed six central defenders on the payroll, including one who is 'not yet fully fit', one who we don't want but is still one of our allegedly highest paid, players. That passes my definition of 'luxury'.

But of course we don't what we don't know, but one hopes, from a financial point of view, either Hird is on his way very soon, or we are sitting on a £2M bid for Cooper.

And one on loan and two who could be . Spin it how you want we won't be past the end of August with all of them. And if someone wants to pay 2 mill for Cooper then great news....

i dont know if it is on another thread but i thought edwards looked tidy yesterday. if we get evatt and we end up with 4 or 5 quality centre halves then so what? theres always gonna be a chance through the course of a season with injuries, resting players and out of form etc. serious competition for places is a good thing isnt it? shame for matty brown though as i cannot see him getting much of an opportunity but i guess he only needs one chance and if he takes it then its his place to lose innit? anyway, i dont want to count our chickens until he has signed. look what happened with hooper and QPR this last week.

Centre half has gone from one of the weakest positions (if not the weakest) to one of the strongest in a matter of days.

I was really impressed with Hird and Edwards yesterday.

The central defence has looked good in all the friendlies I've seen (didn't go to Southport) but it's mainly because they're now getting shielded by a much more competent midfield. No more having to face the full weight of the opposition midfield and attack bearing down on them - a lot of the time the ball doesn't get past Jimmy Ryan, and if it does it's going out to the wings.
This is what we've needed in midfield for a very long time, and, without wanting to start up another feud, I'd love to have seen Mark Randall playing in front of Ryan and Togwell/ Morsy. As it is I'm just left wondering how we can afford, not one, but two Championship standard players in Ryan and Roberts.
Not forgetting Evatt from the Premiership. It's a good time to be supporting the Spireites

I agree besides the Randall comment, the lad has no place in our midfield, in a nutshell he isn't good enough to replace anybody in our side. Who would you leave out to accommodate him ?

Mark Randall wouldn't even make the bench with the current crop of midfielders we have.

O'Shea. Inconsistent, an inferior version of Roberts and not in the same class for creativity as Randall. Best brought on as a surprise package if we're struggling with twenty minutes to go.

Sorry mate, I have to disagree completely with this, you say Randall has far more creativity than O'Shea when O'shea has scored and created far more than Randall ever has in a blue shirt. Randall created little to nothing while with us so I am baffled by your claims.

O'shea is twice the talent Randall ever was or will be, he is inconsistent (I think that too) but still better choice midfielders currently on our books to replace him than MR would have been. The only thing I can say Randall has created is a rod for his own back through lack of effort and application to a team game. Anyway he has gone end off.

Oshea is far better with the ball at his feet, he can beat a man and shoot from distance better than Randall! I know this for certain as Paul cook brought in oshea and got rid of Randall.

Very. If he can't pass a medical his future in football is doubtful.

We'll have to agree to differ then. But at the moment the ball-winning is taken care of - Ryan and Morsy/Togwell: the trickery is taken care of - Roberts: the missing piece is somebody with a real eye for the pass that opens up a defence. And the person who really needs that pass is Mark Richards our 'lone' striker, who isn't going to win a lot in the air but makes excellent runs off the ball which are very often not seen.
If you look on Player you'll notice that Randall spotted them on a regular basis.
