The forecast was a bit wrong today. Expected no cricket but instead we got a slightly truncated game in. Leaky covers meant a quick preparation of another track which played better than we feared. Good win an all.

Ashover lost to Denby I gather...I get the impression the skipper would like me back for next week.

I would think so. Strange moment for me today. The first time we've not had two umpires this season so obviously we had to do square leg which doesn't generally involve anything at all. I did a ten over stint and there was a big appeal for a caught behind. The standing umpire (who when alone gets quite a decent wedge in my opinion) comes striding over to me as the bowler is stood hands on hips a couple of yards from our batsman enquiring in no uncertain terms as to why he hasn't departed the field. He tells me that he's fairly sure of an edge but couldn't rule out a bump ball - presumably wanting me to give the casting vote on a decision that would have perhaps tipped the game in their favour. Of course that's cricket sometimes but he was better placed to make the judgement & of course is paid to do so. A little unfair to ask me I felt. I genuinely had no idea and said so and he was given not out which didn't go down well. Especially when he finished 58* and won the game!

Seems a little off from the bloke getting paid to shift the decision, especially a key one unless he's done it out of habit.

Not had the pleasure yet of a stint at square leg but did end up doing some scoring the other week.

I'm not averse to giving team mates out - once gave my brother out lbw and he was skipper but I just thought it odd. If he was in doubt that he was out I'm unlikely to be inclined to encourage him!

In 6N we'd invariably be without one and I'd often do both ends - giving no balls my personal favourite! Especially when they ask why. 'Cos you weren't behind the line, pal'.

Been there done plenty if umpiring in the past. Was batting for my favourite moment however when with us doing both ends at rosehill meths a bloke had already bowled 4 no balls in the over and then suddenly ripped the other bats stump out. As the batsman was halfway back the umpire, one if our lot, calls no ball again and it turns out he was getting fed up calling then and was going to start letting them go until the guy bowled someone and he had to call it eventually. Sparked a lively 5 or 10 mins!!

needs dropping for good

Bresnan the better option, better bowler (and would at least pitch it up) and better batsman, also hardly lost a test match in an England shirt (feel bad bigging up a porkshire player)

Also need Tremlett back fit to replace Finn who is going backwards

Broad is even becoming a figure of fun to the commentators due to his arrogance

Anderson, Tremlett, Bresnan and Swann was the bowling line up at the test I wactched in Sydney in the last ashes series over there and with everyone fit I still reckon that's our best bowling attack

And then.........Ripping them to pieces this morning!!!!

To be fair to Cartman, I agree with him, Broad is too inconsistent whereas Bres is a steadying influence, you know what your going to get, L&L every time. And it also shows what a difference using the Duke compared to the Laughing Jackass ball.

Laughing Jackass??

I presume you're on about the Kookaburra??

Never heard the bird termed that before.

The Duke is superior in every way, in regards to TMC.

How they ever got the contract in the first place I'll never know.

Praise to my 11 yr old son who opened the bowling tonight for Alfreton U13s in their win over Ambergate, and started with a 3 wicket maiden!

Assume it wasn't at Ambergate which will be under water from it raining last week...hate that ground!! Just always seems to be wet when I've played there plus the way it slopes due to being an old river bed makes it awkward to play on.

I remember playing a friendly there many years ago & Martin Camm hitting a few way over the A6.

Aye seen plenty hitting and clearing the road there. One of our games was a tie where both sides got 270!!!

Yes it was at Ambergate and we were debating whether it was an old river bed due to the dip and remains of a bridge. Due to the overcast heavy conditions it was swinging like mad. Decent but expensive ale at the pub next door which appears to have gone quite upmarket.

Magoffin's match figures for Sussex v Somerset are pretty tidy.

31 for 12

At least it looks like Somerset are due to struggle just like us.
