No, but we can take over a contract if his club let him go. As Wharfey said, he wants to return north, apparently. He certainly provided me with my happiest moment of Jack-watching, but he is the archetypal brick-sh..sh..shed "Division Four" centre-half.

If he is unhappy there and on good money they may well release him. A lot of clubs would like to get rid of their high earners if they could find takers. He's a localish lad isn't he? May be homesick.
I wouldn't rule out paying fees either. We will for the right player. We paid a reputed six figure fee for Cooper so money is available but certainly won't be squandered.

A swap deal with Hird would be the most likely as you say he's still got another year to run, but just to put a bit more fuel to the fire rumours are abound on the Shrimpers board, though none of them mention us, nor have they a clue where he may be heading. Here's a copy and paste job...
Also, apparently the word is that Cresswell is looking to head back up north for family reasons and may not be here next year. I must admit his display and reaction at the end of the game wasn't that of someone who is about to depart, but has anyone else heard this?

If he's dead set on heading back north it could be a win/win (well the best win Southend are probably going to get), though I could see us picking up some of Hirds wages (but this was probably always likely to happen if we can find a taker for him.

Could it be a swop with Trotman? (I'm sure he's still under contract for another year)

I wouldn't have thought Trotman would be our player to swap, but yes they could end up with him.

The Cooper fee is interesting.
A pal of mine told me that no fee was paid to Hull, just an agreement that they could have first refusal on Darikwa if a firm offer came in for him. The same person also told me that no compensation was paid to Accrington for Paul Cook, something which Cook himself has since confirmed despite CFC stating otherwise.

Had a great game against us at the Proact - nearest thing to Blathers I've seen.
Not so great at the b2net. But to be fair, not many Rotherham players did. Here are the highlights again just to jog the memory...

If a player is dead set on leaving then they may as well try to rescue the situation the best they can instead of trying to hold him to his contract against his wishes especially when he's unhappy a being a long way from his family and a swap deal with Hird may be as good as it gets for them, especially if we are to pick up some of his wages.
Besides they are just rumours at the moment, but I love it to be true and I'll not say anything about him keeping Richards on his toes for our top goal scorer

True but today he struggled at times with the big black guy they started with up front for the first half hour or so. Good job he didn't have his shooting boots on!
