Bowling wise we have match winners, probably only the Sth Africans that have a better attack. Batting I agree about Bairstow, needs to go and have a good county season but not sure i agree about the rest of your plan. Why confuse things with an opener batting at 6 and a middle order player opening!? I'm not convinced by Compton so I'd possibly stick Root up top who appears to have the game to do it, get KP back in and possibly bring Morgan in. Looking back over our really good spell we o ly really had KP that could take a game away from a side batting wise.

I'd include Cook in the batsmen who can take the game away from the bowlers, especially the powderpuff rubbish that the Aussies have got, but I think he's taken his eye off the ball with the captaincy. Obviously I'm basing that on what he did on the last Ashes tour.

Also the bowling attack will be stronger while we're using the Duke ball rather than the Kookaburra.

Cook did well in India as well and I think has something like 7 hundreds in 8 games as captain prior to the NZ tour. Not sure what the bowling struggled with in NZ but hopefully they'll be firing for the summer in more homely conditions. Strange but you'd have thought they'd have done better in NZ than in India but it was the other way round. That said in not panicking yet...like to see Swann back in, just a bit more reliable than monty plus his batting and fielding.

I'd personally stick Root up top with Cook. Then go Trott, KP, Bell, Morgan, Prior. Harsh on Compton maybe but I think the side would be better both now & for the future.

I think that's probably about right. Not sure what it is but something about Compton doesn't convince me.

Agree about Compton and Bairstow - let's not forget these were batsman friendly pitches in NZ, too - but Morgan's had his chance.

Also agree about Root being given an opportunity as an opener.

Cook, Root, Trott, KP and Bell should give us a platform whilst Prior, Broad and Swann can provide runs down the order. A reliable number six has proven elusive for some time, though.

PS: has anyone mentioned the Town supporting Blackwell's recent retirement?

I wouldn't be suprised to see him turn up at Cutthorpe or somewhere when the snow recedes to smash the ball all around the place.

In lots of ways Blackwell was a throwback to the days when cricketers did no more excercise than playing & netting & to get where he did was testament to his natural ability. It's just a shame that as a local lad Derbyshire lost the best years of his career.

From what I'm led to believe he is looking to get into umpiring and spent a lot of his free Saturdays last year umpiring in the Durham leagues. If he's doing that I can't see him playing.

Cricket related but shocking to hear that NZ'er Jesse Ryder is in a critical condition with a fractured skull after an attack in Christchurch.

He's had his mishaps in life but he's one if those you pay to watch when he fires!!

I bet his fielders are delighted at that - especially the ones who don't bowl! Apparently it's 4 degrees and minus with the wind chill!

Whoever caught that ball in the gully deserves a medal. I'd be wearing mittens.

With Spring in the air, what is the general concensus for DCCC hopes this season?

I just hope we can get a win on the board in the championship early doors as we tend to start the season well with a bit of green in the pitches.

Overall, I am not overly optimistic about us staying in this division as pitches tend to be flatter and I am not sure we have enough up top.

Hopefully I am wrong as ever...

Well Mr Tyke but not everyone sees us as a soft touch even though we are the 25/1 outsiders.

Taken from Sporting Life's Div One Preview

Verdict: They won't win the title, but nor are they certainties for the drop. Quotes as low as evens to finish bottom are an insult and if the bowlers perform, the team spirit remains strong on the inevitable tough days and Chanderpaul scores as many runs as he ought to then they may well prove a touch overpriced at 11/2 with sportingbet to finish above Yorkshire and Sussex. Plenty of ifs there, though.

Every chance we'll avoid relegation. I'm confident.
