Consistent- Ernie Moss, paid to score goals, and score goals he did you can't be a slouch and score over 200 league goals. Absolute legend.

Best to watch, Salmons or Birch.
Dancers are considered mad by those who cant hear music.

Hewitt was a consistent 6 out of 10, yes. Moss was dire (see above), but not dire with enough consistency.

Once hewitt moved to RB he fullfilled his early potential. Became the first name on the team sheet under johnny no goals, in a side that was top half league 1 and FA cup semi final...not too shabby.

Moss, he looked slow and awkward - but played in the second tier of english football, and is our recoed goal scorer of all time. You dont get a record like that if your dire. He made the most of what he had.

Dyche- yes he played midfield, so did Evatt - both looked uncomfortable and slow in the centre. Once both moved to CB they found thier position. Just because they played a position does not mean they were any good there.

Which Moss are they describing as dire? The Legend that is Ernie or the Insurance Salesman (Employed by a Director (and as it happened worked with my sister)) David?

Dan Archer, although just a midfielder but he was our engine room and made us tick, one minute you loved him next you hated him,he was that type of guy, always wanted the ball and made sure he got it,we desperately need a player of his calibre today.....

Sorry- I was talking about David Moss- was too young to have seen Ernie and wouldn't dare to criticise such a Town legend

Evatt really did need the 'game to be in front of him' and Dyche's early seasons were badly disrupted by injury (and his inability to play centre mid didn't help either, I agree). He looked good as an attacking right-back in Chrissy Mac's 5-3-2 with Steve Williams on the other flank for a while but once he became a centre-back he was top class and I'm not sure I've seen a better centre-back than Dyche in my time as a Town fan. Only Blathers, mebbe, or Bomber just about equal him.
These go to eleven.

The question was unanswerable really because how do we know how versatile players were in the past for the reason we always had dedicated players to fill positions. Unlike now where we have wingers at RB and wingers playing as strikers. If JS had a proper balanced side then Drew would never have gone to RB and we would not be asking the question now

Someone mentioned him earlier and I'd give my versatility vote to Andy Kowalski even if he was consistently average. Long career and never let us down. Played in defence, thought he was going to make a striker at one point but most games in midfield.

Didn't Frank Barlow once describe Kowalski as "Good at occupying space"? I probably got that from the excellent Lucky Whites and Spireites.
These go to eleven.

Non of todays team would get into the Cox/Barlow team of the late 70's early 80's. Talbot and Jack would be on the bench.

For those who remember Dave Blakey would be streets ahead of anyone when it comes to consistency, I think he played over 600 games and rarely put a foot wrong.

Best players Ive seen Hitzleburger/Bonneyman/Salmons/Birch/Archer/Fenoughty etc etc.Any of todays team probably would not be in the top 50.

your input is worthy of a thread in itself,i have often wondered what peoples opinions are of players from different eras,i was always of the opinion that todays players are far superior but now im not sure ..start a thread its a worthy debate.

I seem to recall Albert scoring a 25 yarder. I think it was in a 3-0 win against Cambridge during the miners strike.

How has Nozzer not got a mention? He played in a poor side and consistently got his goals.

Not sure about this maybe Stuart Basson could put me right ....

Im sure Jim McGuigan moved Holmes much further forward for one match ...possibly towards end of 68/69 season at home to Chester ...

Sure Albert wore no 8 and sure he scored at Cross Street End in a 2-0 victory

It is a long time ago and it IS entirely possible that Im talking bollux

Also seem to remember Eric Winstanley playing up fron t along side Ernie at home to Plymouth circa 1973 ...Derbyshire Times had a photo of them both in action the week later with some """"""""hilarious"""""" take on the " Eric and Ernie comedy partnership "
THEY FLY SO HIGH , NEARLY REACH THE SKY , AND LIKE MY DREAMS THEY FADE AND DIE
