cant accuse Mr Allen and his board of not chucking money at it? How many players we got now more than some premiership teams I would think.

Another good signing in my opinion. Cant be all bad if he was Brighton's player of the year last season, though i suppose that was also true of Harsley!!!

In another thread someone said they wanted an alternative to Gray at right back, well if memory serves Whing is a right back, so there ya go.

Welcome to the Promotion Bandwagon Andy.

Interesting titbit from Wikipedia:

In a unique incident in 2005, Whing picked up an injury whilst eating.

"Apparently he was eating a lasagne and somehow pulled a hamstring - it has to be a world first."
—Bemused Coventry boss Micky Adams explains Whing's injury.

Looks like it he'll replace Gray. Whing played with Rob Page (and Colin Hawkins) and Coventry.

Has played under Micky Adams for both Coventry and Brighton but Adams arrived at both clubs after Whing.

Good, we need someone to replace Gray for a bit, his distribution is shocking.

His defending isn't much better too.

We can't afford to give goals away due to waiting for Gray develop into a better player, now we are in this position with two months to go we can't throw it away.

Looking on Soccerbase, it looks like he hasn't played for Brighton in the last 3 months.

Just wondering if he has been out injured or just not made their 1st team. Either way, he's unlikely to be match fit so we might not see him tomorrow.

Have to agree though - he looks like he's built like the proverbial brick ****house!

A centre half that'll play instead of Page to avoid triggering his new deal?

Or am I being cynical?

Hope it works for us. We're due something from Brighton for their pathetic behaviour and cheating down the years.

He got 77% of the vote, which seems to indicate he was the outstanding choice as opposed to getting votes in a "best of a bad bunch" relegation outfit

Looking at soccerbase myself, he's done better than ex spireite Colin Hawkins, he's played one game for brighton this season, got sent off in it and not figured again!

Whing has come up against Oldham a fair few times in the last few seasons, so JS should know plenty about him, plus he's 26 year old so looks like a great signing, on paper at least.

Whing hasn't played since late november when he got subbed in two successive matches, a 3-0 defeat at home to Leeds, and a 4-1 defeat at Norwich, his last sub was in the 85th minute so it doesn't automatically suggest an injury, plus Guy Poyet became manager at Brighton in mid-november so i'd assume Whing dropped down the pecking order shortly after the new manager arrived.

Me being cynical then!

Seems a decent signing if he was player of the year in the league above last season.

I like Gray but I don't think RB is his position.

That said difficult to point any fingers defensively after 6 wins in 7 games when generally we've been strong at the back.

Easier in some ways to improve when relatively successful.

Another little snippet (from wikipedia): Andrew Whing scored the last ever goal for Coventry City at Highfield Road in the 6-2 win over Derby County in the 2004-05 season.

Wonder if he'll score the last ever goal at Saltergate too!

From his profile on Brighton's site: A tough-tackling full-back who loves to defend.

And also from their site regarding his move to us:

Last year's player of the season, Whing has fallen down the pecking order at right-back following the arrival of Inigo Calderon and Gavin Hoyte.

He has made just four appearances since Gus Poyet's appointment
, and the Albion boss says it is important now for the 25-year-old to get regular football between now and the end of the season.

Poyet said, "It's a similar situation to James Tunnicliffe, who is at MK Dons. Andrew has been out of our squad for a while now and he needs to play football games.

"It's important for him to stay in shape because he's one of our players under contract. I hope he enjoys it at Chesterfield, and we will keep an eye on his progress."
