He went over on his left knee, i believe the same one he injured last year.

He signalled as soon as he went down that he needed help, although he still jumped up and shielded the ball out to provent their player getting a a cross in. Jamie came on but as Downes was over the goal line, he got up and limped to the half way line, where he then signalled to the Ref and went down again. He got straight back up when Hewitt got to him and limped off, to where Austin was already stripped off and ready to come on.

It appears he knew as soon as Jamie got to him the first time that he couldn't carry on and jamie radio'd the bench accordingly.

Really hope its nothing serious but I can't help but have bad thoughts on this one.

We really can't afford to lose him again. It can't be entirely coincidence that we've stopped leaking goals since he came back into the side.

I agree he has been brilliant since he came back but i dont think his return is the only reason we have shored up at the back.Having a right back that stays at right back therefore the Cbs dont have to get drawn out of position covering has been a big factor too.

Not discounting the difference Downes has made but didnt Goodall also return to the side about the same time as Downes.....

I'm not sure that's really true is it? We haven't had a decent RB for a while now. First we had Little who looked good going forward but more often than not was poor at defending and had a tendency to drift into the centre of the defence, leaving the right flank horribly exposed. Now we have Gray, who has poor positional sense and an alarming tendency to pass the ball to the opposition. I'm not saying our defensive improvement is entirely down to the return of Downes but it has certainly been a big factor in that improvement.

3 at the back in resent away games has been a big factor in the defencive improvement and Downes was pivotal in that formation. Austin is'nt mobile enough to take his place. We need a replacement fast to keep our push for promotion on track!!!!
