does not realise what a big job he has on his hands with the quality within our squad. We have heard TW stating that there won't be room for 'hoofit' football as the manager likes to play attractive football on the floor. It's ok trying to get players to play pretty football circles whilst training but the proof of any pudding will be seen when in a full blooded game.

I know we are locked into contracts and all that but you can't make players suddenly become comfortable on the ball when they haven't shown that apttitude previously. As fans we are going to have to be very very patient with the transformation in style of play and maybe look to the start of next season to see the real deal that Sheridan is hoping for.

The start of this season mirrors last year so much, I hope we can do a lot better.
God I hate this league.

Although we don't know the impact of Rico's presense/tactics (not by any means blaming it all on him). I'm sure he's after the right people, but he might've got to the first training session and looked at most of the players and thought, "Why the hell didn't these lot go up last season?"

But i mean no one knows, i think everyones just eager to get a couple of signings just as an early indication of the squad, me included.

I mean players that might not have looked up to it last season under Rico, might look like different players under Shez now, so really we might not really know where our current squad is really at.

Does this mean that Page, Austin, Gritton, Currie and Gray have all got an extra yard of pace? Have Kerry and Harsley grown six inches? Has Derek further developed his silky passing skills. Get real everyone. I am not being pessimistic but what can a new manager do?

New management team all highly experienced ex pro's with a limited but reasonably decent track record in football management and guess what?
God knows how many folks coming on here thinking they know better. It beggars belief!
How about we give them a decent chance at the start of the season and reserve judgement for a couple of months at least.

Page, Currie.. We know their quality from recent past with other clubs, surely it just needs the right tactics.

Austin, Gray.. Did nothing wrong last season, Kev did a solid job, and Gray is progressing well.

Niven.. His passing improved imensely last season, and even without considering what he went through, he proved how important he was to us.

Gritton.. With him it was just confidence, he had a couple of dodgey games around the time where Gregor was playing well, and became the new boo boy, let's see how he does with a bit of direction and a positive crowd not on his back. Also i think fitness was a key thing for him.

Kerry, Harsley.. what does height have to do with it? Kerry is inconsistent, but he is young. And I thought that Harsley was decent before he fell out of favour. Give Shez some chance to get some height and it won't be a problem.

Basically i'm not saying that our squad will now be amazing, i'm just saying that all these things can be worked on, and these "forgotten" or "disgruntled" players can be improved yet despite the crap of last season.

My point is that old, slow players do not get younger and faster whoever the manager is. I agree Derek is vital to the team but we need a playmaker type, particularly if JS wants to play a 'passing' game. The squad in general is weaker than last year so why be optimistic just because of the changes at Board and managerial level. Do we think LR deliberately made these people underachieve.
If you work out JS's win, lose, draw, record (as published on this website) at Oldham in terms of points averaged over a 46 match season it comes to 69. Good, but not special and exactly equal to our record under Rico in 2007/8. We need a better squad and time is running out. I remember posting the same thing last year and we never got the extra forward player until Ward was on his way. We now need at least 1 midfield player, a full back, a wide attacker and a striker.
Most of the people on here who are saying don't be negative will be back moaning before the end of September particularly if the ground build falters.

Get us a decent centre half in!. I think we will see a significant improvement in the number of clean sheets.

I’m actually pleased that JS hasn’t jumped straight into the transfer market before fully assessing the players he currently has. His sole purchase of Breckin gives an indication of the style of football he is likely to adopt with IB’s passing ability and calm style emanating from the back.
We should not forget that in Lester we have the best forward in L2 and we do possess quality players within our squad already.
If only....

Are we not considering Ian Breckin to be a "decent centre half" then?

I'm not going to name names but we are 6 players short in the team at the moment to play the desired way.

Look at your assessments and then ask yourself how good defensively will we be as well.

Grossley unfair to say that the new manager and his team should work miracles this year. When they bring in their preferred playing staff thats the time to judge - maybe the yougsters will be the answer.

69 points in a league above withone of the lower budgets in the league was a fair effort. We had the play maker in Montrose but he chose not to stay so it's obvious to everyone we need another. I'd rather start of slowly, just stay in contention and build the squad as the season goes on, rather than trying to assess and address every need immediately. The addition of a centre half that can head it is an obvious improvement on last year and a good start to the re-build. We have a few weeks left and there are a few names doing the rounds so new faces will be coming in

good post i certainly see where your coming from, my feeling is sheridan wanted to see the players first hand in training before he makes his mind up on further strengthening the squad.
By his own admission he said to be looking at bringing a couple of players in, breks being one and a striker touted as being the other, who that is time will tell but we know the rumours seem to point to Burton.
Now he's had hands on with the squad for a week or so which obviously means he may already see where we need more strength and depth, i feel he may be realizing every training session he may have to bring a few more faces in.
Wingers is an obvious one as by all accounts passing attacking football is what we can expect, i also feel with the right manager and imo that is sheridan we have the makings of a formidable squad which just needs some tinkering.
So in conclusion i have every faith in sheridan and wright to bring the right players in and give us good quality football, if we can get a better home record next season we won't be far off.

What i will say about sheridan is he stated it was a clean sheet for all the players to show him the ability and passion they possess to play for our beloved club.
This he seems to be doing as he's not jumping in with both feet and signing all and sundry, if he feels we need strengthening in certain areas i know he'll bring the right players in.
Us as supporters cannot ask for more than that at this stage, once he gets the team playing as he wants with the players he wants i'm sure we will all be happy spireites.
Until then i'm happy with how things are going and i for one can't wait for the new season to kick off

One question - how can he assess the team and its capabilities without wingbacks. Surely he has got to bring them in sooner rather then later.
