Never been to one at the venue in Dee-Dah but 35 quid seems steep - I expect it's more sportsmans dinner these days.

Any of you remember the classic player of year bashes down at Aquarius - no posh food just loads of beer! My favourite (can't recall the exact year) was when they had David Copperfield - NOT THE MAGICIAN - and he had Hubbard up on stage taking the mick. All the players used to go and it was always a cracking atmosphere although the last one held there was a bit of a farce - more players there than fans but still had a good time!

Not quite in line with the thread, but I'll be going to the South Yorkshire Football Awards on Monday evening, courtesy of free tickets. Is anyone else? And should I not be able to contain myself, or is it a pile of tosh that I really shouldn't slash out on a new suit for?

If you planning on slashing out on a new suit MB, you probably ought to get it dry cleaned before the dinner.......

The cost and the fact that it is probably a fairly formal set up puts me off.

Like you, I remember the heady days of 'player of year' at the Aquarius. At the age I was then it was more my style, basically, a good p**s up with some awards thrown in.

Thing is sold out, according to the current lead story on the main site.

Aqua bashes were a giggle, one year i got dragged onto the stage by Worzel (ex-groundsman) to sing "New York, New York" with him, definitely some sore heads after each night there! Haven't been to one since Aqua shut, so dunno what they're like nowadays.

I sat on Downesy's table the season we went down and he copped the lot awards wise!

All the other tables seemed a bit reserved but we had a good giggle on our table, Arron mucked in as well to his credit!

We got him to say stupid things in his acceptance speech's. We gave him a challenge of somehow throwing in a word or phrase into his speech; the one I remember was he'd somehow got to get 'Skippy' into his speech otherwise he had to buy us all a beer  Just like a true, pro he kept pulling them off no problem  He received a big cheer from our table when he dropped the word in, much to the annoyance to some of the other tables :D

A few of us collared Hubbard & his wife in the bar area afterwards and he got quite a bit of grief I can tell ya
In-fact even I got a bit embarrassed in the end at some of the stuff that was aimed at him! But in fairness to Barry he took it well and came out with some good explanations!

It was a good night, but to answer your question... yeah it's a little refined.

If nothing else you'll be able to see just how the Radio Deedah presenters really do have faces for radio

Downes was on our table that night, do I know you?? lol..

I forgot about making him say things in his speech. Were going again this year, it's has gone up a tenner though.. it's a good night but very formal. I remember some stuck up woman moaning at our table for having a giggle and enjoying ourselves when the awards were being read out..

And as another thought the bar isn't all that cheap either there!
