Hmm, 28k in 1938. Averaged 13,000. Lowest that season was 3,400.

Regarding the new stadium and our history...not had a gate over 12,000 since 1981. When our average was 7,300 and lowest gate was 3,059 v Reading. Although we did get between 10 & 12k against sheff U in 1982 & 88.

The last season we averaged above 10k was 1967/68.

(not sure when capacity was cut to under 12 or 10k).

Other stuff:

There's only once in the last 12 seasons we've not averaged at least 4k and that was the turn of the century when we were relegated to the poo league.

When we got promoted under JD from this division we averaged just 3528 at home. Whilst under Fats brown an average of 4849 punters helped boost his earnings.

Also, 1980-81 was the last time we had an average attendance of over 4,884 (it was infact 7,331), so is there much demand/need for a capacity greater than 12,000 (which would be the capacity with the corners filled in).

I haven't the foggiest idea, all i can tell you from the site is
The largest attendance for any Football League match involving Chesterfield was recorded at St. James's Park, Newcastle, when 53,675 saw The Magpies beat Chesterfield 2-1 on December 21st, 1946.
No idea how many fans we had present though, i'll hand that over to the oldies.

I remember about 5000-6000 at Hilsbrough one season, thats the biggest away following i can recently think of for a league match.

In the distant past it was customary for the supporters club to pick one or two games a season, for an outing. Apart from that, though, it was left to the indivudual to make his own arrangements. Local Cup games might have taken a train, courtesy of Thomas Cook, but I can't recall reference to regular away travel before the early 60s, when crowds were beginning to diminish anyway. Perhaps someone with programmes of that era could have a look and see if trips are advertised?

One of the Sheffield derbies would be a good call for a high away following. Or the Liverpool game in 1980? As a footnote the most poorly-attended away match might have been one at Lincoln in the 1900s; few went from Town because the city was in the grip of a typhoid epedemic. A rather more effective deterrent than away-fan bans and membership cards!

You amaze me

What was the average in 1969/70 ..

I recall some very good crowds against the likes of

Wrexham
Swansea
and Peterborough
THEY FLY SO HIGH , NEARLY REACH THE SKY , AND LIKE MY DREAMS THEY FADE AND DIE

Only once in the last twelve seasons we've not averaged at least 4K?

And what's our current average?

4099 + 2 telly appearances.
Would it be fair to think of the £60k generated by telly income as an additional 6000 cyber people coming through the gate?. It has to be accounted for somehow. Might as well add it on total gate receipts.
Get it on, bang the gong , get it on

For the Villa replay in 1934 we took 1500 by train.

:) Interesting that,to date, we haven''t surpassed the 168k aggregate attendance of the 1980-81 season. Remember the Barnsley game with 17,169 crammed into Saltergate, New Years day wasn't it?
