Just had a rather alarming call from the bank, some scrote appears to have cloned my card (we think at theTesco speedbank) and tried to buy a bathroom suite with it in town !! Last week I remember a couple acting a bit dodgy around the cashpoint and they must have watched me put my pin number in.

They are operating in the area so make sure nobody has the opportunity to watch you enter your pin, I must admit I never really looked who was watching me and never thought it would happen to me.

Please also remember that before they use the card to make a big purchase they tend to send a small charity donation, on mine they sent a £2 donation to the NSPCC, very thoughtful of them. If this small donation is sucessful then it gives them the confidence to splash the cash.

Thanks for the info DM

I always cover my PIN with my left hand while inputting, but the problem with criminals in this respect is that they're quite prepared to clean your bank account out completely

Why not pass their decriptions to the police?

They're bound to attempt this with some other punter

How were they intercepted at point of near-sale incidentally?

Already been stung last year and i now steer clear of the BP petrol station and the ATM there on Whitt Moor, because that was the only place i used that debit card, but my bank said these fraudsters just put numbers in.

I too copped it late last year with a telecomms company in Germany who I've never dealt with or heard of taking money from my account using expired card details.

Be careful if you have a profile on Facebook or similar sites as they often display your date of birth, e-mail address, hometown etc - all of which is useful information for identity theft.

Could the moderators please leave this thread open on the main area of this forum? I know this is not football related but if giving this thread visibility on the main site prevents one person from suffering loss of money or identity theft and the utter balls ache that comes with it, it will be worth it.

Don't bother reporting it to the police, reporting CC fraud is like pulling teeth. Luckily for Ducky, he'll get his money back, the poor merchant will be left paying the price.

It's a shame they can't get a job.

Sorry to hear it mate, thanks for the info! I tried to take cash out at the Jet garage in Brimington and that took my card, not the same thing, but just letting people know who live round there and use it!

i know its not always convenient, but why not play safe and use your card on the machines inside the banks. makes more sense to me.

The bank immediately rejected it because of the NSPCC donation which preceeded it and flagged it as unusual activity on my account, normally only direct debits and the odd cash withdrawel comes out

Just like something out of "The Real Hustle"......Only thought it ever happened on TV. (Well it doesn't happen in Finland anyway). I feel for those who lost their money to con artists. :D

Thanks, particularly the reference about Facebook from Doughnut. Heard of another Spireite from Duckmanton who had his account wiped out last week and I think that is the reason he didn't make it to Stockport.

Had my bank card cloned a couple of years back, went to get some dosh before a game at Notts County only for the machine to say i'd already withdrawn my daily limit! Checked and they'd had £300 out at 2355 on the Thurs night, another £300 10mins later, and then a final £300 on the Sat morning. Called the security line, and was told that the withdrawals were made in Streatham and Brixton. Took several weeks, but the banks gave me my dosh back, but never heard anything more of it other than the scam was done at the ATM's inside HSBC on the Market Square, and that dozens of others had been done over too (including a mate).

It happens all too often I'm afraid & believe me, it doesn't matter if you cover your pin as you input it, they are very very clever!

Most high street banks won't even get the police involved unless the amount involved runs into the thousands. Doesn't really help build an accurate picture of how often it happens.
