The stuff is not 'awful', or they wouldn't sell any. It might not be to your liking but by any reckoning it's a well-produced and very popular drink.

To me this is the problem with real ale

You get the booze snobs declaring it so much superior to anything else but they usually need to ask for a free taster to see if they’ll like it, so they aren’t all that confident on how good it’ll be (and don’t come back with the myth that people ask for tasters to see if the beer is off - if it was any pub would replace it after buying a pint)

Belittling people for their choice of drink is just weird, I like lager, I like ale (but would never ask for a taster cos that’s just odd) - let everyone drink what they want!

No idea if it happens, but McGoldrick in the 10 with the legs of dobra and Markanday either side of him would be outrageous

You'd be surprised, I returned a pint in a pub I used to frequent becuase it tasted like vinegar. The next time I was in I ordered a pint of the same beer, assuming it was a fresh cask, but nope, it was even worse somehow!

Isn't it always Golden Bud? That stuff is awful and I say that as a real ale drinker. I'd take a pint of ice cold fizz even at more money. The only tempter would be the speed of getting one (if I had a blocked nose).

No it's not. It's really not

I always ask for a taster, nowt to do with being a real ale snob or seeing if I like it.

I just enjoy free beer.

You really are missing the point of the taster.
With so many different brews nowadays of 'craft ales' it is possible to find a taste for everybody, but not everybody likes the same brew. What is the point of paying for a pint at todays prices to find you cannot drink it?The small taster gives you the chance to find if it is to your liking or choose another that is.I know some lager drinkers will say how their drinks differ, and I agree with regard to some, but the mainstream lagers have minimal variation, and it is absolutely nothing to do with 'booze snobs'.
So is asking for a taster 'odd',or just common sense?

Good pubs want you to taste the beer. Good landlords want to sell you a drink you will enjoy.

At last some good posts on here. Just beer related

A taster is called a half! Pay for it and stop expecting stuff for free.

Try asking for a taster of a dish at a restaurant cos you may not like it

🤣

To be fair, the beer discussion is a bit more interesting than talking about rumours from useless twitter accounts!

And passes the time before we get another snippet from our ITK members

Any of the many small breweries would encourage any landlord to offer 'tasters' how else do they showcase their ales, bearing in mind there was over 400 ales exhibited at Rail Ale at Barrow Hill, that's a lot of competition. That's also a lot of varying tastes, how else does do punters determine the one most suited to their pallet? Offering 'tasters' works or they wouldn't do it.

Yes there are beer snobs, if they want to make themselves look arses that's their outlook. You'll get the ones who try to abuse the system, you get the 'cocks!!!' who'll approach the bar studiously ask for a taster of generally the stronger ale (and dearest) have a taste and then select a pint of the cheapest, they have to live with their conscience.
There's many ales out there and tasters are a way of showcasing them but maybe not for one on a pub crawl.

Oh I've heard nowt regarding anymore transfer movement just to keep on track.
