Over the years we've had a fair few occasions when we've had players on loan who have made a real impact and then we haven't been able to land them. Some of them maybe we never had a hope of signing, like Thomas Hitzelberger for instance. But I remember others, Steve Kinsey 1982, Sammy Clingan 2005/6, Jack Hunt 2010/11 and notably Daniel Johnson 2014.

Some though - we did get, so which loan players have we signed that went on to be great for us ?

Marlon Fulop. Outstanding goalkeeper. Played 7 times for us in 2005. Played 24 for times for Hungary. Sadly passed away aged 32 of cancer. Actually made his debut for Hungary 3 weeks after being recalled from us. Didnt go on for us, but if we are talking about great loan players he is worthy of a mention.

challenging the memory here as i think the following players all initially came on loan and then became full transfers and were great players for us.

Jay O'Shea, Steve Blatherwick, Billy Mercer, also did Allot initially come on loan.

Then Calvin Plummer i am more certain that he was a loan first then a full signing.

Didn't Liam Cooper come in on loan initially?

It's always the ones we didn't get that I remember. Clingan, JCR, McDermott, McMaster, O'Hara etc. Say what you like about Roy Mac but he could spot a player.

Didn’t he come as part of the Danny Wilson deal with Steve Kendal

i thought Plummer and Kendall came on loan and then we signed them, but I can't see anything about that online.
Also - he was already a superstar for us but didn't David Reeves come back on loan in a second spell?

Steve Cherry was another one who looked like he could play on his own against 11 and still end up on the winning side! I thought he was superb, but we didn't do too bad when Mick Leonard turned up.

Even though David Davis only played a handful of games for us, you could see he was going to have a decent career.

Which camp will HT & Jenson feature? 😂

In terms of ability, George Margrietter was head and shoulders above anything we’d got at that time and probably had since, too.

Brilliant player he was. As was Johnson who came the same season. That team cook got together in league one was glorious, the best team I’ve seen in my stint as a town fan.

Hitzelsperger was very good....came as part of the deal to keep Stefan Moore i think it was company and ended up being by far the better player.

Can we add Deane Smalley into the mix some of his goals got us over the top in the first season at the new ground.

I think Plummer was a loan then a full signing but in separate spells whereas the ones you mentioned went straight from loan to full signing, with no gap, I think.

Mark Kendall on loan from Tottenham in 1979/80 was fantastic for us , saved Mark Smith's penalty at Hillsborough in the 3-3 draw. We were due to sign him but Barry Daines and Milija Aleksic both got injured for Tottenham and he was recalled , we then spent over £100,000 on John Turner and Kendall then joined Newport. When Kendall returned with Newport the following season the reception he got was incredible and I've never seen anything like it since walking off the pitch with a Town hat and scarf on. Great goalkeeper was Mark and he passed away to early of a heart attack.

They did indeed. I remember we platyed Sheff U xmas 82 or thereabouts and Mick Gooding was part of it as well. Got injured I remember - quite badly
Always like Gerry Armstrong who came later. Didn't we have a loan keeper from somewhere for 1995 play offs. He was amazing

Billy Stewart who played in the 2nd leg at Saltergate after Beasley was injured then the final at Wembley. He had a bit of a chequered history with us after some remonstrating and disagreement with the Kop when playing for Chester a few years previously. I think maybe 88/89 when we were relegated to the bottom division? And re his performance in those approx 120 mins I don’t think he had much to do at all!
