We should be looking for better players than we already have - boot included. If the management team think this (potential) new keeper is better and worth 150k, then so be it. We're not likely to blow the whole budget on 1 player - there will be more in the pot.

Boot is fine for the middle of league 2. As is palmer, grimes and Colclough. But if you want to push onwards and upwards, we need to find better and more consistent players.

Sometimes a player outgrows the team. This team has outgrown a few of the players.
Here we go again!

£150k for a keeper is mental really, hopefully it’s false

Markandy should clearly be the main target

I think a keeper is the least of our problems, boot is without a doubt the best ball playing keeper we have ever had, this is backed up by other managers in his careers assessments, I’d bring in an old no2 who does not mind being a no2

The PV manager praised him for his kicking abilities but only picked him 23 times in 5 years.

What are Boot's deficiencies? By your logic they must be correspondingly big if his kicking is so good.

I think it is more likely to be a matter of when not if Markanday is a full time player here. By the sounds of it the club are offering him a pretty decent wage and what's better than being paid a lot of money? Being paid a lot of money to be at a club where you thrived.
And a three year deal that may have been signed? Just gossip mind

I'd just prefer us to put this rumoured £150k into the pot for a new defender, a more mobile progressive midfielder or a striker with People's work rate but better finishing and physicality.

In my opinion we could have gone up in the top 3 had Boot played 46 games in the league last season, hence why I don't think its one of the more important positions to strengthen this year.

Hilarious this board complaining how the club is supposedly spending money on players…good job it’s their business & they know their strategies in recruitment

I'd be more than happy for Ryan Boot to be our number one, with the young keeper on our books as his back-up, whilst bringing in another young keeper for the under 21s to bring on, but I'm not in charge of the recruitment drive, thank goodness.

I find some of the posts on here astonishing. Ive read post after post complaining that we haven’t signed anybody compared to our competitors who made mega signings ie MK and then when we do sign somebody (allegedly), we’ve paid too much and that the GK position is not a priority. Someone has even gone to the trouble to analyse his stats to contrast to what we have already and makes out he’s no better. Obviously, all these ‘armchair/keyboard’ managers are far more knowledgeable and experienced than a manager who has won multiple league championships and promotions…

Anyway, its all a good laugh and I cant wait to see a lot of egg on a lot of faces :windup

I think Boot is absolutely fine. Especially once he seemed to be given more license to just play his natural game rather than being made to play sweeper. You're not gonna turn down an upgrade on any player but if he's number one come the start of the season I'm alright with it.

This is where I am also.. if the Kirk’s are happy to spend £150k on a goalkeeper because they think it improves us then let them. The work they’ve done financially proves that they aren’t shy in sticking their hand in their pocket and not asking for anything in return.

In some ways the gk is the important position in the team, certainly if you have a dodgy keeper, but Boot isn’t dodgy - at least not consistently enough to be a problem. Nowhere near the best we have had but nowhere near the worst. Consequently there are currently more important positions to strengthen.

That would be a valid point if it was an either or situation, but there is no evidence too suggest it is.

Boot is a good keeper, but as you state he is nowhere near the best. That’s exactly the reason we are looking to strengthen. Personally I like the statement of intent, building a team with a strong keeper is crucial. All that remains now is to see if he is as good as we all hope!!

It's a priority position, more so for us given how we play and what we require from a goalkeeper. As I see it, it's a position we didn't get right last season.

As for a few posters being critical about other posters expressing an opinion as to whether or not we should be paying a transfer fee for a goalkeeper, it's a debating board. There's no right or wrong answer, it's an opinion. For all they know, the same discussions might be taking place in the boardroom.

I’m no keeper expert, but it’s league 2 , show me a keeper who in a ball playing team can play the ball better, you will not be able too, I’d say his biggest deficiency is I can’t ever see him save a penalty, if he has I can’t remember, we had Thompson in the nets who ran round the ball to get it on his best foot, perhaps cook is limited in his keeper knowledge because he was 5hit

Exactly this. If you trust the people at the top of the club why would you be arsed about the money when it’s not coming out your own pocket

Boot had a good final third of the season but not a great start and he’s never fully convinced me. I hope we can do better. And yeah, signings don’t necessarily play out in order of priority. Weird for anybody to suggest that that’s the case.

I think it's absolutely certain those exact conversations have been had.

Whoever's number one goalkeeper come the new season, I have every faith that he'll be decent at his chosen trade. Cook is about improvement, whilst keeping the dressing room close knit.
I'm sure, that whoever comes in, whatever the role, they'll be better than who's left.
I'm in no rush to see multiple new signings, so I certainly won't be losing any sleep staking out the ground looking for new faces.
