A-ha, that's called 'underwriting' my friend (and I'm a broker not an insurer, but I can see why an insurer would want an increased premium in this scenario), you may or may not be familiar with the term 'Moral Hazard' that is used in the insurance industry? Think insuring an unoccupied building in an area with a high crime rate/antisocial behaviour, insuring a car whose owner has previous drink driving convictions etc
And as my old boss used to say in my very first insurance job, if they don't like the premium tell the client they do have another choice, they can always self insure if they wish. I suspect in this scenario though, the rewards will more than cover the increased premium and then some, otherwise said hotelier wouldn't be doing it.
Get all of the explanations... after all I was placing over £2m of insurance business every year. However, when we looked at at the option to alternative use a couple of hotels, the explanations I got were based on comments that basically said we dont trust them so we charge more. Have they ever seen a stag weekend (or even worse a hen weekend) and the things they get up to? The moral hazard seemed to start off being that it was a bigger risk but when pushed very quickly became we have no data so we assume the worst....
The corresponding reduction in EL and PL premiums didnt seem to be forthcoming on the quote either...
Self insurance not an option for us as it was against group policy.... but the reality is in my 10 years of looking after it we would have been better off if we had. But I'd have been fired twice if we had when we had two sizeable claims! (EXc Covid actually - we did OK from our covid claim
