They're probably paying him a fair wedge and he's got nothing to lose.

I don't think his reputation suffers regardless of what happens. If/when they go down they were already heading there anyway, if he somehow keeps them up then he's pulled off a miracle.

On a slight tangent I read they were paying the guy who got sent off 5 grand a week, this must be one of the most shambolic seasons in the history of the football league.

They signed 7 players on a contract basis and 4 loanees in January alone- all before Hughes was appointed.

I don't think many of them are wanted by the fans, him especially!

Speaking to CUTV, Mark said: “It was really difficult for us this evening. Clearly, it started off badly. We lost Matty Dennis in the pre-match warm-up, so we had to make a change there.

“Then we had Sean [Fusire], who had a really bad nosebleed, we couldn't stop it. So he had to come off very early. Embo [Elliot Embleton] comes on, gets sent off.

“I have to look at that again, I'm not sure. I thought it was one of those unfortunate ones. He's got the lad on the achilles, they're painful, but does it warrant sending off? I'm not sure. I need to see a clear enough image of that.

“The referee and certainly his officials weren't great for us tonight, unfortunately. So we had to make changes, had to change our shape, change personnel, obviously, right through the game. We just had to keep the energy.

“We had to take Georgie Kelly off at half-time because we needed the ability to make substitutions in the last stage of the game because we knew we'd tire, given we were down to 10 men. So almost everything that went against us happened tonight. It's very difficult to win games like this against good opposition, in fairness, if you haven't got the tools to do the job.

“That's where we were towards the end of the game.”

The fourth official spoke to the referee to advise on sending Elliot Embleton off, Mark spoke on the situation further:

“Well, he [the fourth official] told the referee that it was a sending off, which is his prerogative.

“He did say that he didn't have any communication with the referee, but he was able to get that message on. Somebody's not telling the truth there. We're disappointed.

“They seemed intent on stifling us and making it more difficult than it needed to be. It was always going to be difficult. We needed just to keep a foothold in the game, and we did for 70-odd minutes.

“Then, obviously, once they got the goal, it was more difficult again. We showed a good response. We got a goal, I’m pleased with Joe.

“Thankless task up there on his own, but kept going, tried to close people down and got his goal. So, yeah, I feel for him. I was more concerned at the weekend, really, in terms of what we managed to produce.

“Tonight was difficult under the circumstances, and they kept going, which is what I wanted to see tonight.”

Mark was happier with the character shown. Despite the result.

“They had to dig in. Listen, they make mistakes in individual battles and 1v1s. Sometimes we don't come out with the ball when we should. Other times, we don't dictate to the opposition, but those are things that have been prevalent, certainly since I've come in.

“We work on them, talk about them. It's about being able to do it when the game's flying around you. For the most part, we did decent enough work, correct work, but on the occasions where we didn't quite get close enough or didn't attach ourselves to people in the box, that's when they get their chances, and that's when the game goes away from us.

“So, difficult for us tonight. Like I said, we didn't really have enough opportunities to really ask enough questions of them as soon as the sending off occurred.”

Georgie Kelly started his first game for United in some time, Mark spoke on him:

“Yeah, I thought he did really well. Obviously, we know we're going to lose Matty Dennis, so we couldn't afford to lose Georgie as well.

“So, we had to protect him. You give him this good 45 minutes, he'll do a world of good, and he'll be okay for the weekend. A number of them are doubtful.

“Obviously, we lost our captain as well, Sam [Lavelle], which I thought was a strange challenge from their player. I think actually, he swung around and hit Sam in the face. The referee's five yards away, doesn't see that, doesn't think that it merits any retribution or anything.

“Basically, our captain goes off as a consequence of a tackle. Their guy stays on the pitch, but the one who did the tackle is sent off. So, it's a bit of an anomaly there.”

On Matty Dennis, who pulled out after the warm up, Mark explained:

“It looks like he's pulled his hamstring, unfortunately. Just right at the death there, he was just on a shooting in practice and just felt it go.”

On Sean Fusire, Mark said:

“Yeah, it was an opportunity. He was starting the game and he's looked really good in training and really didn't get started in the game. Got the bang on the nose and we couldn't stop it.

“But he'll be alright at the weekend. He'll get more opportunity.”

On Cameron Harper, who was missing after his concussion. We aksed Mark if he’d also be missing on Saturday, he responded:

“Yeah, I think that's the case.

“So, we're missing quite a few influential players for us tonight and as the night progressed, it got worse, steadily worse. So, just got to draw a line under the game tonight. It was always going to be a difficult ask for us tonight, even if we had a full complement.

“But we stayed in the game. I think we've got to take that as a positive, but no points again. So, we have to go for maximum points.”

On Stephen Wearne:

“Yeah, he's got a spasm in his back. Yeah, the last few days it’s been really sore.

“It's not loosened off to any great extent. So, hopefully he'll be okay. We'll see him Thursday and hopefully he'll be okay for us.”

The gap remained at nine points for the Blues, with Tranmere also losing.

“We're running out of games. That's the reality of it.

“So, yeah, there's no change in terms of the position that we're in, in terms of the points we're behind. So, yeah, games are getting short now.”

I’ll be honest I felt a bit sorry for Carlisle last night. Literally everything went wrong for them. Typical of a side in free fall and heading to the national league. We were very much the same when in that position.

I still remember the awful feeling of knowing we were actually going down into non league and knowing it would be a long fight back for league status.

Every Carlisle fan feels like that this morning

Whilst Oldaker has been part of the exercise of slowing it down I would like to know what the instructions were to the subs when they came on as not one of them gave us any impetus.

So, Grimes could have simply opened his body up and passed to Gordon in space, as he had done all game. Instead, he must have had a call from Oldaker to play the disastrous square pass.

Seeing the game out should not involve Oldaker being instructed to demand the ball that deep when the usual practiced outlet is simple.

That said, Grimes failed to spot the danger.
Get it on, bang the gong , get it on

Is that a reference to the red card? I was talking to someone behind me at the time so didn't see it but I've watched it and it's an absolutely nailed on red card. The sort they would show referees as an example of what one is.

Hughes, great player but a crap manager. God knows why he's doing this. Feel for Carlisle fans as they're a good bunch and to be going back to the pit of misery on the back of a double drop (which we know all about) must be heartbreaking.

I have a theory with regards to great players managing lower league teams. Take Hughes for example but it could be Rooney or dare I say Saunders. They have absolutely no experience of lower league football or the players that play there. All their playing careers they have been surrounded by great players who have the skills to play as their manager desires. Down here in the lower leagues we have players who try but lack the quality. Take last night for instance, I was all ready to come on here singing the praises of Grimes who I thought had a decent game then out of the blue, calamity strikes. No one saw that coming but Cook accepts that may happen and moves on whereby a the likes of Hughes et al. will struggle to understand why he did that and be unable to deal with it. Grimes has been a really good player for us but he always has a cockup in his back pocket as do most of our players. That's how it is down here.

Not many premiership players make good managers and I think its down to a lack of understanding in the game, they end up with a squad full of mediocre players and no clue what to do with them because its not like when they were players where everyone did what they were supposed to.

Embleton was pretty highly rated when he was at Sunderland and scored one of the goals in the play off final that finally got them out of league 1 a few years ago. Had some bad injury luck as well including a really bad leg break that saw him out the door at Sunderland after a couple of loan spells prior to that which didnt really work. He looked well off it last night which the tackle was probably a product of as Dobra was too quick for him.

The lad that scored their goal is former Sunderland as well, came through their academy before being nicked by Man Utd but spent the last few years on a tour of the lower leagues on loan at various clubs.

It is mate. It was a disgraceful challenge that could have easily done some serious damage.

I've been having a browse of the Carlisle forum and it's fair to say they absolutely despise Embleton as well as most of their squad. Reading that brings back painful memories of our drop out of the league.

I enjoyed the game, very good team performance on the whole, soft goal to give away but plenty of positives overall.

Looking forward to the trip to the Wirral on Sat.

The one at Vale did it for me. Absolutely gut wrenching and I felt sick walking out.

The irony is that had they not beaten us, they'd have joined us in the NL.

I think he struggled to get up to pace from the moment he came on in pretty strange circumstances, dont think he had even warmed up prior to getting the shout to go on when they couldnt stop the blood from the other lads, on loan from Sheff Wed, nose. He didnt have a shirt on and i think Hughes decided they could wait any longer after another close call by us. He always seemed a bit off the pace and Dobra was too quick for him leading to him getting caught. It was a red, he's had a couple of red cards for Sunderland back in the day for similar late'ish tackles and i'd forgotten but his bad leg break came when he was also sent off for the collision that caused it!

I suspect they saw him as a good signing when he came in but looks like he's done, like most of them i suspect, nothing in terms of getting them out of it. I think you can take the lack of ability etc sometimes if as a fan you can at least see a bit of fight and desire from players but they didnt even really show that last night. I know they were down to 10 but even then they didnt really get close to our players and as mentioned by many their keeper kept them in it otherwise we would have been out of sight. We will know exactly how they feel as they know whats coming even if its not been confirmed as yet.

It's not a nice position for anyone in that predicament waiting for the trapdoor to open, but take note those (particularly Morecambe) that gloated and laughed at us at the time...

must be very difficult for fans of carlisle, dropping to national league once is bad enough but knowing you are returning to that again and how difficult in reality it is, well it's a feeling i hope we never have again.
