Nor do batteries. Just more media rubbish. Hence my comment.

Engines need oil changing every year or two that needs sorting for recycling, none of that rubbish with evs. Much less use of brake friction materials too as you get regenerative braking...

You don't need children miners dying digging raw materials for combustion engines

Nope, but you do for your smart phone, tablet, laptop batteries...

Surely the solution is to either put more effort into managing supply chains (wonder how the car companies sign off their corporate code obligations around their supply chains?) Or find a battery tech that doesn't need lithium... not carry on polluting and killing the planet with carbon based fuels..?

I agree however how many devices could be powered by one car battery

I guess it depends on the type of car... second hand luxo barges are worth sod all whatever their propulsion especially if they don't have the right badge. Think Audi A8, BMW 7 series, and big French car etc. Conversely small hatches do better and that will probably apply regardless of propulsion - once people realise batteries don't die at 8 years and they can check the state of the battery more easily that you can the state of a bore or a big end....

And especially as EVs are perfectly suited to lots of short journeys....

You state ev vehicle batteries don't die at 8 years so how long do they work well cos if I'm buying a 2nd hand one I need to know how long before it is worthless / useless .

How long is that piece of string?

Most are warranties to 8 years. Expectations are 200k miles in extreme conditions, 400k if treated better.

Like an internal combustion engine, no one really knows... but there is a lot less to go wrong. No timing chains to change, no flywheels to go, no bore wear, no fuel pump issues...

I don't generally keep my cars long but given the biggest issue with evs at the moment are used prices- caused by massive demand for new cars as they are tax efficient versus a more wary used car market that doesn't know what to make of them - then if you plan to run one into the ground, given the current great deals, it could be a bargain...

And having had to buy a new engine for a company car when the timing belt went at 80k miles and less than 4 years old, I can quite see the attraction of fewer parts to fail...

I think all EV drivers knew it was coming at some point even before it was announced a while ago. Quite a few will have gained a bit longer on the free ride by renewing their tax early before the end of today to get a year free from now.

Good.

I have never understood why they didn't have to pay at the expense of those who do.

Well in theory VED was based on emissions so as electric cars didnt emit any harmful emissions it would be nothing. There was also the push to get folk, especially company car drivers, into them. that said outside of company car drivers not sure how they get other folk to move into them as the cost of them increases plus not everyone wants and plenty more dont need a big SUV although thats an issue with both fossil fueled and electric cars.

No shock there. With more and more electric cars on the road could not go on tax free forever, government would loose a bomb

Well we used to use vehicle tax as a way to get people if dirty polluting SUVs on the school run and into something better for the environment.

Now we just use everything to raise cash whilst talking about net zero...

Also got mine free for another year until it goes back and then the new one is leased so who cares how much it is, I am not paying (well clearly I am but I don't see it!)
