One pleasing aspect of recent years is the number of youngsters now wearing shirts of their home town team rather than Man Utd, Liverpool or years ago Derby or Forest. Even probably more annoying are those wearing shirts of either of the dee dahs in town. I could understand glory hunters of Man Utd , Liverpool and back in the 70’s Derby and Forest but the dee dahs have only won one trophy between them since long before the war.
I could never understand people who don’t support their hometown team. Used to work with a few Blunt supporters who all came from Dronfield so I suppose they had some excuse even though they were in Derbyshire, but then came across a bloke who was born and raised in Newbold. He was a good bloke but it irritated me that a lad born and raised in town should support the Blunts. I eventually asked him why and he said when he was a kid his father wouldn’t take him to see town whereas his uncle took him to Bramhsll Lane. I suppose family can account for who you support as much as where you are born. I’m only glad my old man took me to Saltergate, then again it took him all his time to do that as he preferred horse racing, and there was no way he would have gone to Sheffield for footy.
Anyway it’s pleasing to see more youngsters in Chesterfield now wearing Chesterfield shirts rather than the Blunts and Bowels nonsense.

I can confirm that the vast majority of primary school kids where a friend of mine teaches in town now wear Town shirts he tells me. Good to see.

One of my mates was a Town fan in the 70’s, early 80’s. Born and raised less than 50 yards from the Saltergate ground. He was even a ball boy there in the early 80’s. He, however, has been a Sheffield Utd fan for years now. If anyone remembers Ian who worked in the Salty Club for many years, big Town fan, now he’s a Wednesday fan and goes there. I just don’t get it.

Once a spireite always a spireite. Dad first took me in the 1969, he’d been going since he was a boy. All my family are spireites period. Family, Community, Country. We ignore this at our peril.
It’s in the blood, passion pure passion.

We are pretty much a one team town

It’s spreading too, even over the M1, Clowne, Creswell and Whitwell, plenty of Deedahs but plenty of Town too

The increase in numbers of younger supporters is plainly evident on the kop - you see far more of them leaping about when we score, especially at the kop end. It's also very evident that a growing proportion of them are young girls, not only under 10s with their parents, but a lot of teenagers, which is brilliant for the future of the club.

We need to get kids to games as early as possible, it’s where the passion starts and in the vast majority of the time lasts a lifetime. I’ve got no idea of my first match, I was playing on the grass bank at the back of the kop at Saltergate, now in my 60’s, it’s in my blood. I’ve also passed it on to my daughter, not sure she’ll thank me for it though.

At least I learnt the habit young.

At school in Leek, wearing the long sleeved Latif shirt with Coalite on the front, back in the 80s.

PE teacher used to shout "Oi, Coalite".

Old habits die hard...

Our PE teacher was Dai Games (and he taught games). From South Wales - you knew what the menu was - rugby, rugby and more rugby...

Has anyone here played rugby in a Chesterfield FC shirt?

Obviously not from Chesterfield, as said on another chat, born in the Staffordshire Moorlands but as passionate a Spireite as everyone else here.

Thanks Dad for making that happen, even if by default, but that's the twists and turns of life...

What a small world Stainlessstephen. David Games was a teacher at my school in Cwmbran, South Wales in the 1970s. He didn't teach me, but his wife was a Geography teacher who attended an A Level field trip I was on. Mr Games was certainly a big unit, as I recall!

Sorry but sounds like he has bigger problems than football.

Ideally yes. But they can start at any age. My father in law was asked to take my lad to the Man City game in the paint pot cup at short notice, as I was with my own Dad who had been taken in to the Royal. He’d not been to any sort of football in over fifty years and had no interest in doing so whatsoever, but just wanted to help me and his grandson out.

He enjoyed that evening so much, since then he’s been to virtually every home league game, an away game at Morecambe and has just bought a season ticket for next season!

I hope you told her that Sheffield is near Chesterfield.

I suppose I'm the other way around. Lived in the north east my whole life. Could have been very easy for me to support Newcastle/Sunderland had I chosen to. Went with my dad's team of Town and never looked back. I do follow and sometimes watch Gateshead, but Town will always be #1

The age profile has also shifted downwards in the past few years I'd think. It's noticeable that folks with paper tickets, looking to find seats tend to be younger. Hopefully a fair few will be joining us older folks in shelling out for season ticket. A very healthy change, if so.

Kids these days seem to have shirts of multiple clubs. My grandkids (8 and 5) will wear Chesterfield, West Ham, Man City, Real Madrid, Inter Miami, some saudi team....and the 2 year old wears Ipswich as they do a shirt that small! They love going to watch Chesterfield with their Dad and me, but still enjoy going to other grounds and teams so I dont think they are lifelong Spireites just yet....
