Bump
Anecdotally, just browsing Andy Woodman's latest interview, waxing lyrical about Grant Smith and the level he could play at. He knows his goalkeepers.

After watching them against Bradford City I did wonder if he might be tempted back here.. You do wonder why he has such a modest pedigree, mainly in non-league, because he looked really good.

Can't really remember him in a sweeper keeper roll here.
Think Cook would want that skill in a new keeper and performed to a decent level

Cheers mate, and sorry that your health issues have stopped you getting to games. I don't go away anymore - too much hassle at my age - but keep up via here, all home games, and TV.

My last game was Halifax home at Christmas about 3 years ago .

Is it just my muddled memory or did JR take a dislike and push him out,or was he here under someone else?

You're correct.

Joined to replace a woeful Letheren then fell out with JR and replaced by Montgomery (who went off injured in the playoff eliminator).

Best keeper we've had in a number of years. Would have him here over the current options.

Didn?t Smith make a howler to allow Grigg to score in the 2-2 at their place this season?
If you tell the truth, you don't have to remember anything.

Time is clouding peoples judgement of him. He is one of a long line of exceptionally average keepers in the last few years.

We've had some great keepers and we've had some right dross in my time following town, for every Billy Mercer, Mike Pollitt & Tommy Lee we've had Ole Soderberg (the Ball is lava), Ben Williams (no, he really is that small, he is not far away!) & Joe Anyon (ugh).
"Do you think I'm here for your amusement" & good riddance to bad rubbish

Don't recall mate - I'm sure somebody will confirm. Perhaps I watched him on a good day and I did refer to his pedigree. However, you don't have to be exceptional if the current custodians are the benchmark.

He did. 5 and a half mins in on these highlights just after Boot had had a couple of moments!!

We have indeed had some poor keepers at times, but I do wonder what is the benchmark for a good keeper on here. Because if it?s some of the keepers we see in the PL (see the errors they make as per the highlights), then I am not sure its a big step up from what we see.
Week in week in the PL we see balls slip through the grasp of the custodian, shots parried back to the opposition, crosses flapped at and, rarely seen in our league, a short pass straight to the opposition. Is Onana much better than what we see?

Most of them below average , I?d say.
These go to eleven.

Ben Williams was a six-footer. Went on to have a decent enough career elsewhere but I remember that match at Barnsley when it was sunny and he didn?t wear a cap so they just kept lofting high balls directly at him, which he kept missing.
Anyon was an absolute pussy cat. Goalkeepers need at least some bravery.
Grant Smith was a decent keeper amidst a run of poor ones.
These go to eleven.

Every week,a watch of MOD or the EFL show, mistakes, bad decisions, poor positioning, lapse of concentration are all on show and then we say we need a better quality keeper. At the moment the likes of a Tommy would be the equivalent of the legendary rockin' horse poo.
