I'm not sure that there can ever truly be no doubt. Obviously I'm speaking hypothetically here and I know this isn't the case, but what if later down the line new information is revealed that confirms the Southport killer was made to do this under threat of his family being murdered by white supremacists in an attempt to start a race war? To reiterate - because I know what the crowd on here is like - I know that isn't the case, it is an extreme hypothetical scenario (but not an impossible one).

If you're for the death penalty, you're accepting that there will eventually be a case where somebody is killed due to an error, because no process is infallible (or is my thinking flawed?). I'm genuinely surprised to see you say you support it for "certain" cases. Surely one person killed incorrectly would be too many?

Apologies for taking this thread off at a tangent, my fault.

Even bigger can of worms..

It?s a good point though. Is coercion an excuse to commit such an atrocity? I think the evidence on this is infallible with cctv footage etc. I guess not cases without any uncertainty or interpretation could only ever be considered and even then used judiciously.

Why surprised? Normally do moderate? 😂.

Off at a tangent but interesting.

I?ve not read in depth today but the headline is that experts are saying there is no evidence at all of murder and it?s natural causes and medical negligence.

To be convicted and jailed for a series of crimes as horrendous as initially believed to now have experts stating there?s absolutely no evidence of foul play is shocking.

They will be the experts sourced by her barristers and lawyers, who will say what they want to hear, and at this stage it is just the case for the defense...I imagine there will be other experts who say it is without doubt the work of a killer and she is guilty...

The law isnt about right and wrong, for the defense it is merely about creating enough noise to give reasonable doubt.

I have no idea which is true but I'm not getting taken in by one side at this stage....

Apparently the panel of independent worldwide experts are working without payment and the lead doctor became involved as it was his work the prosecution based large parts of their case upon and he appears to say his work was misinterpreted by the prosecution.

He also says he tried to get involved last year to explain how his work had been misrepresented during the prosecution.

It?s a sorry mess all round and no one wants any further upset to the parents of the babies but on the flip side, if it is a catastrophic miscarriage of justice then it needs investigating thoroughly again.

Listened to the press conference, it?s quite definitive, no murders, all deaths results of failure across the boards, not down to the actions of one nurse

one press conference by, id assume, her legal team. well thats it then, forget the two trials let her out now.

lets let due process take its course. if she has a case for retrial or verdict overturned she will get it.

Not her team, at a press conference in London, the outcomes of a review of the cases by an international panel of 14 experienced clinicians

Independent experts from around the world

Just listened to the ultra impartial Red Handed True Crime podcast (which is fantastic btw)

They're a bit too full of their own humour/self-importance these days those two. Cracking jokes about serious crimes etc is a bit jarring.
