After having time to reflect on the game, I think we have to put that one down to experience, but, for me, there isn't enough movement by the players in front of the central defensive pair. We've seen Dunkley Naylor and now Grimes asking for movement from the players ahead of them, but it's not happening enough.
Some players weren't at the races yesterday, but I'm sure things will get put right. Onto Tuesday, a free hit,and a better game, hopefully.

By the time the 'keeper has rolled it out to Grimes and he's had a look around, everybody is marked up and there's nowhere to go, which leaves Grimes being shouted at for holding on/not finding a decent pass. The ball needs to be moved about much quicker - forwards, back or sideways - to give players chance to lose a marker and take a pass.
Accrington were very good at closing down because they had time to do it. Everybody we play will now know the tactics to use, a feature that was starting to emerge even before yesterday, to be fair.

Though he finger tipped onto the post from my position behind the goal

He did good save but unfortunately it came back straight across him leaving the goal exposed unlucky really most times it would have gone the other way

I didn't see the handball penalty claim, didn't hear the crowd shout for it, and it wasn't on the highlights, so I'd love to know if we've been done over once again and I've somehow missed it. Obviously won't change the result

He definitely handled it, and the players plus several thousand others shouted for it. The ref was in a decent position, and the forth official was looking right at it. Our bench were going mad, hence the manager getting booked again.

The manner of their second goal highlights our weakness as it did at times last season. At the top of my summer shopping list was a player similar to Mike Jones to play alongside Tom Naylor in CM. We failed to sign that player and Tom's back covering in defence. For me, that's where our problem lies.

DJ's having a superb season, probably a contender for player of the season so far, but he's not our player of the season without the ball.

Who is the player in our side, that is going to put a player into the back of next week with a tackle before it gets into our third of the pitch?

I thought we were poor yesterday, created a lot of our own problems and without wishing to make excuses, it did feel like it was one of those days.

Too slow going forward and a lack of defensive bite in midfield. DJ and Banks are very talented footballers but lack that ankle biting quality.

Against well organised deep sitting teams we struggle with a cutting edge. We look pretty but not dangerous, especially at home.
A new hope.

Think Cook hit the nail on the head we have good players yet at the moment an average (my words) performing team. Still think we?ll be in playoffs as a minimum.

The front four - not much between 7-8 of them.
Full backs - pick themselves in Gordon and Tanton
GK - Thompson

IMHO it is now Cooks job to play pick the most effective (maybe not the best) CB and CM pairings!!

This is backed up by the stats. Banks and Oldaker are 1st and 3rd in L2 in successful long passes.
However our top successful tackler per 90 minutes is Markanday, at 45th of all players in L2

The best pair are Dunkley and Araujo both injured.
With what's left, it would be Williams and Grimes.
Naylor is a square peg in a round hole and imo should only play there if three out of the four of Dunkley, Araujo, Grimes and Williams are injured.

We have five flair players in midfield, but we need at least one who can remind the opposition that he's there. If Jones isn't available and Naylor is going to play centre back for a while, then we'll have to play Metcalfe unless Fleck is going to be fit shortly.

As always very bad refereeing Decisions are never shown on highlights and as you have eluded to Drysdale doesn?t appear to like us

Another collectors item was on 3 (maybe 4) occasions we were awarded free kicks (albeit in not too dangerous areas) for their centre half wrestling/pulling Griggs shirt (no booking for persistent though) that never happens ask Quigs. It just doesn't happen. Very strange, was Drysdale building up a defensive mechanism for obvious post match and probably on field comments of something like," tha's given us nowt" so he had a ready made response.
I've not seen the free kick count I'm sure we had the majority , but not the "big" ones.

Will Grigg was dragged, held, pushed, and kicked but the ref didn't seem to care, and as for the hand ball, Stevie Wonder would have blown for it.

the ball has to be moved forwards quicker and not lumped forward. we are too slow shifting the ball and easy to set up against. i would like to see the same style but more variation. lets get the two wide 10s making runs behind the full backs, lets get them turning.

I'm sure Cook said in his post match that he shares the frustration/doesn't want or like to see this sideways passing.
Pumps up the possession stats but it's the score line what counts

I hope we get the full match on Youtube 'cos I'm convinced we saw a new variation on pressing tactics by Accy. That was, they got tight on both our fullbacks at the very earliest opportunity. Even though Tanton did well to get clear a couple of times, it was very successful imo.

Agreed, but being vertically challenged which in my opinion is the main problem the option of playing it on the floor is limited due to the amount of opposition bodies in the way. If the opposition play deep which they do, we are again limited in being able to get round the back. Problems problems.

we also saw with notts county (and to some extent accrington) having a triangle 3 in the middle of the park shutting down the space and limiting the areas that the central number 10 can work in.

I posted that would be their tactic before the game having listened to their manager pre match

I though Tanton was clear to receive a pass from Boot on numerous occasions but Boot decided to distribute to the left or punt it down the middle

The other notable tactic, which I forgot to mention at the time, was their unhesitating fouling on anybody who was running into the area with the ball, before they actually got in penalty land. I think it happened three times. Contrast it with our standing off and not getting in a challenge, let alone a foul, in the same situation. Nobody wants to see cynical football, but if it's the approach that pays off for every other team we'd be fools not to look at it.

Boot would never choose the latter option. If he did he'll be dropped.
