A few random thoughts v Cheltenham

We were the best side again over 90 minutes. This time against a side that played in L1 last year. And despite the fact that we were (again) short of some of our better players and (again) had to have different combinations on the pitch.

Other 'goods'. Tanton, Markanday and Araujo are better players than we have had in the past few years. So is Gordon, although he was partly at fault for their goal yesterday. Berry is a threat whenever he gets the ball. Colclough was far too good for their fullback. Oldaker did well again. Dunkley did the CH job of heading and kicking and being strong well.

The not so good. Drummond struggled due to minimal service and being outnumbered and bullied. Boot was at fault for the goal. Naylor lost his position too often and threw Tanton with his runs down the right wing (whilst playing as a CH). It wasn't why they scored, but he was miles out of position when they did. Dobra missed a couple (again) which he ought to have put on target.

The very good. Madden getting a few minutes and looking outstanding. Madden / Colclough / Berry / Grigg / Markanday / Naylor / Mandeville / Tanton / Gordon in front of Dunkley and Araujo is a very strong side. Add in Fleck and that's a L1 side. With Dobra and more besides.

What an improvement

Another post I can only agree with, the glass half full types IMO are in the majority sensibly.Thought the few touches Madden had showed a real quality, must admit a player I never expected to be applauding in a CFC shirt.

For the first time in ages I?ve watched a live Premier League match. It?s like watching Borehamwood

Being fair to Arsenal it was down to the circumstances, 11 v 11 first half they went toe to toe with City and probably deserved to be winning. Second half there was no point trying to match them with a man less so they put in a fantastic defensive display that reduced arguably the best side in the world to passing endlessly around box not creating a lot and it took a nice bounce to a city player to finally get the equaliser. Yes they used every trick in the book to break up play as the game wore on but any side would in those circumstances, to be honest i think we could be better at doing it at times seeing out games.

If that?s the two best teams in the best league, forget it. I can watch MOTD as they cut out the time wasting and VAR delays but I?m not going to waste my time or sanity watching live Premier League again.
I don?t want Town to employ ?dark arts? aka ?game management? aka cheating.

Bringing it back to the Cheltenham match, I felt much less frustration knowing we had dropped two points because we deserved to, than knowing we?d dropped them because of bad decisions (see Swindon, Gillingham)
These go to eleven.

Thought it was a good game to watch and actually one of few Premier League games i've sat and watched recently. If it helps get us over the line in some games i'm fine with us using some tactics to break the game up a bit.

Back on the Cheltenham game i've not seen a good angle of it yet but should we have had a pen for the tackle on Tanton in the box second half? I was in the Family Stand section of the West Stand so fairly close and from that angle it looked clumsy from their defender and a foul.

If a player goes down with cramp they ought to be made to go off the pitch. That would cut down a lot of the blatant time wasting.

It strange only players from the winning team seem to go down with cramp in the last 10 minutes. 😉

Yes, they call it game management. I call it cheating

What a frustrating game of football.

Naylor needs reinstating to midfield as we all know, and Araujo needs to be starting games. Dunkley struggles with the distribution side of things so we need to make sure one of our CB's is a ball player. Madden only playing for 10 minutes was annoying too, but he made a big impression. Great to see Coco back too. As frustrating as the match was, and it descending into farce a bit towards the end, we still deserved to win on chances created. With Madden, Fleck and Coco still to come into the team we aren't full strength but when we are, teams best watch out.
