Being paid a lot shouldn?t really matter. The way the top level fixture calendar is being squeezed is ridiculous. Champions league being extended, international tournaments being extended?.it can?t keep happening.

Presumably they'll all be fine with their wages being reduced to reflect any new maximum games/hours per season limit.

You know which fixtures will get scrapped as a result and then it will off to America or the Far East for their blank week off

Agreed. Not a leg a leg to stand on with this. Players at that level are on criminal wages. How dare they moan. Managers need to use the huge squad as you suggest.

Boo hoo, we played 52 competitive games last season if my maths is correct.

The majority of Premier League teams will have only played 38 plus a few league and fa cup games, not all their players are 1st choice internationals for their respective countries either, so 42 - 44 for those outside Europa and Champions League spots, again boo hoo.

There's literally millions of football fans that would donate a kidney to get the chance to play professional football at their level, 44 games in a season, 25-100k plus a week, treble boo hoo.

Try spending 6 months away from your loved ones not knowing if you're going to be seeing them again, I've no sympathy whatsoever for them.

They can always choose another career pathway.

feels to me like top flight football in this country is slowly slipping away, the prospect of euro super league has popped up several times, then gone away but subtly they have expanded the champions league to this new extended format, whilst slashing Fa cup replays, european premier league teams entering league cup at a later stage.
What next? well you can see a day when the "top" teams don't even enter the league cup,

bit by bit it feels to me like it is all moving in one direction. personally don't even watch the champions league anymore

I watched Clay Cross v Southwell last night. Much more entertaining than watching PL. 3-2 and could?ve been 3-3 or 5-4 😂. Surprisingly skilful and all for ?3 with my ST.

Haven?t watched a Champions League game for years. Have Sky Sports for cricket, golf, darts and EFL. I?d rather a sports package ex PL.

I watched Belper v Cleethorpes last night. Didn't even realise there were European matches on until a plastic Liverpool fan near me piped up about it. I simply don't watch European football- too much diving, and I don't want to support UEFA's greed.

I don't lose any sleep over the issues of overwork amongst Premier League footballers but its an interesting question to ask how many games are too many games for players to be expected to play per year. You can point to how much they get paid and say they are more than generously compensated for any number but, at some point, players bodies just won't be able to keep up. With international football, and this stupid new FIFA world club cup, so many of them haven't had a decent break from playing for years now and don't have much prospect of doing so.

Some good points in this thread too but maybe not so much the player's faults as their bosses...

They should rotate the squads more: That's the managers's job, I'm sure that the players would agree.

They'd only end up adding money-spinning friendlies in America or wherever: That's on the clubs not the players. Some of them probably enjoy these jaunts for their "personal brand" building but I'm equally sure a lot of them would prefer some more time off.

2 months ish between the end of the season and the next pre-season for most players, hardly working in a sweat shop 18 hours a day for pennies. They are meant to be professional athletes with all the fitness, conditioning and nutritional teams supporting them, a few hour training sessions a week and a 90 minute game a couple of times a week, let's not feel too sorry for them.

Despite this the clubs still arrange exhibition games overseas when they have a free midweek.

Personally, I hate the Champions League. Why are teams who are not champions of their respective league allowed to enter. It should just be for league Champions, hence, Champions League. Rant over

That's sort of my point though, a lot of players haven't had that sort of break in years. It doesn't matter how much they get paid, if they don't get proper rest then their bodies will give up eventually. I don't feel sorry for them working hard and I don't suppose its going to put any of them in the poorhouse if they have to retire early but its a shame if huge talents burn out before their time because they're being constantly thrown on the pitch.

Hard isn't it. Money rules all, so teams are constantly incentivised to play their best players. Ideally there would be a lot of rotation as Prem teams typically have large squads, but with that you risk losing games which equals lower league position which means less money. So basically just blame the inherant greed of capitalism, because more money is also the reason the powers that be want more matches.

(The players have nothing to lose but their chains, they must acquire the means of production!)
