Goal Scoring Problems

We have an attacker who has scored 4 already, has played there before and has pace to burn. Stick Berry up front.
We also have ample amount of cover for him on the wing - mandeville, jacobs, coco (when back). Its a bit of a no brainer.

Apart from he is a winger, does not look like he can hold a ball up and I actually don?t think he even played there for Macclesfield much

Spot on, maybe we can play without a CF and do something a little different.

I'd hope we'd use his pace, and make the defenders turn. It's no good expecting Berry or Drummond to hold the ball up or head it. They're both more like Doyle than Grigg or Quigley, so that's how we have to utilise them.
If Grigg's out for a bit, let's hope Paddy Madden can take up the slack because it's asking a lot of either Berry or Drummond to fill Will Grigg's shoes.

That only works if there is space in behind defenders to do it. Dont think it would take long for them to realise its the only real option so sit deeper to restrict the space and force Berry to play in front of them.

As soon as our '3', whoever they are, start to get into the game more and impose themselves then we'll score goals - on a plate for Madden, Drummond, Dobra, a.n. other. Our fundamental problem imo is that their possession stats are inadequate. They won't be when Fleck takes control. We have to be patient though cos he'll injure himself if he starts too soon.

You play through them and make them put a challenge in. I'm sure Paul Cook will come up with a devious plan 😁.

The 9 minutes highlights seem to show a misplaced pass every frame. Certainly a bad day at the office.

Berry has never played there before for us nor at this level. If he has played there before it was at the same level as Drummond did.
I believe Mandeville may have played central as a striker for Doncaster but not necessarily as a one up top.
Obviously, if we are going to be without Grigg, Cook has either got to bring somebody in or experiment either with personnel or with the system.
They have a week to work on it and decide the way forward.

I can only think that a deal dor a replacement has fallen through because to let a senior back up striker go and have nobody lined up to replace him is a head scratcher

There's no evidence that Quigley could serve well as a back up to Grigg, except as a substitute. When given the opportunity to start matches in a lower league towards the end of last season he did nowt, and we lost matches. Maybe a harsh conclusion, but it's what Cook saw.

It's fascinating how good Quigley has become since his departure, had he not gone and was still here, they'd be the same (if not worse) blind panic on this forum with him as our only option
