Honestly, not sure where Madden and Grimes in particular fit in a first eleven based (admittedly only one game) on Crewe. I?d leave Naylor at the back, he was so effective sneaking off down the right and linking up with Campbell & Markanday as well as his balls out of defence and his threat from set pieces. Grimes is a bencher for me.

When we play teams that actually want to score goals we'll need naylor in midfield as neither banks or oldaker know how to tackle.

Cook suggests he is tinkering with systems and with team changing shape during games. Naylor can seamlessly move out of midfield into a back three as and when required. In a back three I see the Fulham lad as being quite useful with his pace and passing ability.

If he is willing to change shape at the back he might also be willing to do so up front too. He is trying to introduce more width and pace into the team too. With 5 options from the bench available to him he probably knows that when things are not working changing like for like will not necessarily make things better.

We have a multitude of different talents throughout the squad and it might be a case of horses for courses with the squad being fully utilised during the season.

Meanwhile, it will be interesting to see what might happen over the next week in terms of comings and goings. Hopefully, the result will see us stronger still. However, if nothing happens in this respect the two I would leave out of the 22 man squad are the longer-term injured Sheckleford & Palmer.

*NOT A RUMOUR*
I see Mansfield trying to ship out a couple of players - Will Swan and Tom Nichols.
Swan looks interesting - played and scored a few last season and at 23 could have popped up on Cook's radar

Or maybe the 2 signings are a keeper and defensive midfielder

But Jones and Akinola do.

I believe they paid a fee for Nichols just before the deadline day last season. Prudent work from Clough again?

I understand Swan blows hot and cold but he does not turn the heat any more than us pensioners will be able to do going forward.

Agree. Even if the tackling isn't there, Oldaker doesn't fill the hole just in front of the back line enough. When we're defending he looks slightly lost positionally and I don't think we can afford to have that

Not sure what games you have been watching but he has done a great job up to yet this season, he came to the club and started extremely well but his form dipped , something has changed this year as he looks a different player he drops into a third centre half role to get on the ball , he looks extremely confident with it and his ability to roll his man when marked tight is different class, fair play to the lad one of the first names on the team sheet on current form.
ITS NOT THE WINNING,ITS THE TAKING APART

Everyone has their target player to moan about, most people are blinkered when it comes to Oldaker and are starting to see him in the same way people started targeting Mark Allott in the same position in the same way. We got spoiled with Morsy & Ryan and no one can live up to those standards...maybe Naylor when we get him back in his natural position.

I?m not sure we will see naylor back in midfield. For me he?s doing an even better job in defence and long may that continue as he;s far better than the alternatives.

I?d rather we sign a defender to partner Dunkley than a midfielder, push Naylor back up.

I prefer Naylor in defence, he has the pace many were crying out for and he can act as a springboard for attacks similar to the way Sheff Utd did with their centre backs during Wilder?s first spell

Gives Cook the option to play Banks/Oldacre which certainly looks to work attacking wise. We?ll have to wait and see how well we perform defensively as Swindon proved like a knife through butter.
God I hate this league.

Jones is another year older, cannot do it match after match, and was not at his best against Man City U21s. I doubt he is going to be a regular starter this season.

Akinola has not shown anything yet. Yes, he has made an odd tackle but his range of passing is nowhere near that of Oldaker. In fact, I would only describe his passing as being negative against Man City as he never looked for a forward pass. If we are going to use the width and pace Cook talks about then the ball has to be moved forward quickly too. Unfortunately, at present, Tim still has quite a bit to learn.

I agree. Midfield seems to have worked a treat in current set up. Id been keen to not not fix if not broken.

Oldaker must be one of the most underrated (by our own fans) players ever to play for the club

We have had many players over the years that when they are not playing weaken the team but go under fans radar usually the midfielders who work hard for 90+ minutes

I agree to a certain extent but I?d say Naylor?s only shortcoming in his game is his pace.

He looks like he?s running in treacle if exposed to a foot race but he has the awareness to avoid this more often than not.
