I was there for his one substitute appearance, I think a few around me were perplexed by my cheering.

Yep, excellent at club level, but couldn't hack it at international level. I think we have to take into account several scenarios, for instance we're these players good enough, well most played at the highest level against others from continental sides and held their own. Could it be that international managers can choose the best player for a given position, but that gets knocked sideways when you see Harry Kane score against Man City or Trippier keeping Grealish at bay. For me it's picking the right players for the system that the manager's going to deploy, and too many England managers haven't done that, although as club managers they have.
Some great players have failed at international level because they're square pegs in round holes. This is only an opinion though.

He he was excellent mate, and another one was Tony Hateley, who took over from Osgood when Peter broke his leg. I'll mention Mick Jones too, yet another great striker who I think played for his country only a handful of times.

I remember getting my dad to take me to Bramall Lane as a kid purely to see Peter Osgood play for Chelsea against Sheffield United.
It must have been in the late sixties in the old first division. I seem to remember but I could be wrong as my memory isn't what it once was but I think it was in the second half and Osgood anticipated that David Monks a United defender was going to make a backpass from very near the halfway line to Alan Hodgkinson the keeper. Monks did and quick as a flash Osgood was on it. He raced away with the ball and rounded the keeper leaving him on his backside before tapping the ball into the empty net.
Apart from Hodgkinson there wasn't a United defender within 20 yards of him when he put it in.
Great anticipation, great pace and great finishing from a truly great player.

I may well have been there myself mate,if Town weren't at home. I would have been dragged along by my older brother to watch his beloved blades 🤮. I took him along to the match yesterday and it was like sitting next to Golden Gordon 😆. He was reminiscing from the minute I picked him up to me dropping him off again. He reckons those on show yesterday were like a pub team compared to the likes of Alan Woodward,Joe Shaw, and Gill Reece.

True, but you could say the same about Tony Currie,Alan Hudson,Stan Bowles, and Frank Worthington. Some talented players there, who weren't given a proper run in the national Squad.

it would be interesting to hear what David Webb thinks of him. Ron Harris thinks that Osgood is Chelsea's best ever player.

Town must have been away that day mate or I would have been at Saltergate at 3pm that day and not Bramall Lane lol.
United had some decent players back then such as the one's you have mentioned and the likes of Tony Currie, Len Badger, Ted Hemsley, Trevor Hockey, Eddie Colquhoun et al.
I've never supported United as I was born a Spireite and that is all I will ever be no matter what but I used to get taken to Bramall Lane back then whenever town were away by my Blade supporting brother in law. He was born and brought up in Heeley so I suppose that's a good enough reason for him being so misguided lol.

It would indeed mate and I don't think Chopper Harris would be far out with that statement although Chelsea had some real classy players around the time Peter was there. John Hollins, Charlie Cooke, Bobby Tambling and Alan Hudson to name just a few.
