I'm not sure how offside can be automated, but it's supposed to be. Do they put the sensor in the toe or the heel of a boot?
VAR is "semi automated" apparently and has been used at previous tournaments and in some leagues in Europe as well. Also believe its coming to the Premier League next season so we dont have the farce we saw last season of someone manually drawing lines on the screen etc. That offside tech does seem to work...looks like its based on footage from various cameras etc and also in this tournament assisted by the chip in the ball to determine when it was played to the person potentially offside :-

Triangulation by numerous cameras in the stadium can produce a real-time representation of the match by a computer, which then determines if a player was on- or offside. However, in order to do so, it must know exactly when the pass in question was delivered so it can position the players on the field properly. It uses the contact sensor to do just this, as the ball will communicate to the semi-automated offside processor exactly when it was kicked."

Think its fairly obvious i thought it was a foul on this thread, it wasnt 50/50 at all as the defender was late tackling Kane with his studs up. I think some have said not that the rules show a level of interpretation so it needs to be more of a foul to be a pen etc but it does seem at times that decisions that officials would give all the time without thinking outside the box dont get given in the box because the result would be a penalty. Its almost like the ref thinks it needs to be more of an offence and he needs to be completely certain it was a foul to result in the potentially match changing decision of a penalty. All the shoving and holding at set pieces into the box that goes unpunished for example but outside the box they blow for a foul no problem.
