My only gripe today was Berry struggling after about 20 mins, ok he made a blistering start but was struggling to get his breath a couple of times late in the first half.

If he’s going to progress in the game he needs to up his fitness levels.

I think Berry in his recent interview referred to the fact that he had struggled coming from part-time to full-time training etc. I agree with you his fitness levels need to improve but there is definitely a player in there as his recent 2 goals show. Personally, I feel when he gets a proper pre-season rather than playing catch up we will see much more from him.

Today, though, he gave us the start we hoped for but when Dobra came on he was very influential in changing the game in our favour. Oldaker was our most consistent player throughout the game whereas Mandeville looks like a rest could do him good.

Southend were very workmanlike and if they add a bit more quality then should be a serious threat to other teams they play this season and be in with a very good chance next season. Hats off their fans too. Never stopped singing. Pleased that their club has been saved. They deserve it.

So, slowly but surely the number of points required to guarantee promotion is being reduced in what is proving to be a fantastic season. Can’t wait to hear the fat lady singing. Let’s hope we’ve got her booked in.

Grigg was in no way shape or form poor today.

I mentioned in an earlier post re Dobra,it would seem that some individuals either take a dislike to a player for whatever reason or do not see the real performance due to 'player' blindness.Today Grigg was continually chasing down and making runs, even though once again he was persistently held and fouled, and once again mostly in front of the ref. Before the usual replies appear I am stating what I have witnessed this afternoon, not because I think Grigg cannot do wrong,if he does that will be commented on also.COYB

A major part of our win today was the solidity of Williams (MOM for me), Grimes, Naylor and Oldaker. Sheckleford played very well too, and Berry more than did his bit, as did Dobra. Clements misplaced too many passes today- hopefully he will get sharper. Tyrer needs to cut out the disgraceful antics whenever opponents go near him and man up- I’d select Boot ahead of him. Well pleased for Quigley.

Southend weren’t too bad a side but we had the quality to beat them. Their support was absolutely top notch and fair play to them- they must feel the relief we did when escaping poor ownership.

Altrincham and Southend by far the best two sides we have seen here this season. Fair play to the Southend fans, they were outstanding today. Wishing them good luck for the rest of the season. they deserve it with fans like that. Proper club and proper support. Great to see.

I thought Hartlepool and Barnet were way better than Southend. Playing a non footballer up front cos he is very tall is daft. Fans great, team average. I’d take their number 2 though.

The beanpole is Dackers- on loan from Salford . Apparently scored at our place for Southend when previously on loan with them. I particularly enjoyed him passing to Tyrer when he had a great shooting chance.

Told you ;) Jones has been brill for us but we need to move forward and Oldaker is the solution

You did, Goku.

I’m happy to accept my concerns were unfounded and even happier with the way it’s panning out.

My pick of their lot would be their number 6, Kensdale. 6ft 4 CH with loads of potential.

Yes - I thought he was excellent, Grigg got nothing from him. One to keep an eye on.

Regarding Clements,I personally was pleased to see him return as IMO he is far better defensively than Horton.Yes he looked nervy for a short time at the start, but consider the difference in crowd size to what he has been used to and it probably felt like a debut for him,a few nerves where to be expected. The whole back four were outstanding and once again a clean sheet resulted. It cannot be overstated how important the defensive improvements have been to our success. It is a joy to watch how this squad play for each other, which is another measure of success.COYB

Our back line today were terrific. The midfield boys at times too pedestrian thinking they have more time than they have, making me more nervous than i should be. Overall a big well done against a good Southend side. Hats off to their fans, great support. I thought our fans were subdued again at times. Are we too used to winning or nervous about how easy it is for things to go pear shaped. It's going to happen. COYB.

different kind of win again today, thought we were a bit off it in possession but really good out of possesion, southend played well and were competitive but never really laid a glove on us, we took our chances well and we move on to the next one, nice to see clements back in a town shirt and he played well down that left side.

now for clarity's sake what is the deal with injuries this season? there was an incident in the 2nd half when williams needed treatment, he was then asked to leave the field and couldn't return for 30 seconds, some 10-15 mins later a southend player went down and needed treatment, but was not asked to leave the field of play, so is it certain types of injury or just inconsistent refereeing?

Ty wasn't fouled. The Southend player was. That's the difference.

In the eyes of the referee!!!

One thing I did notice yesterday was we didn’t do this “6 passes inside our own penalty area thing” and went longer from the keeper instead with regularity. At times it emphasised our lack of raw pace but generally it made us less vulnerable to their pressing game.

24 seconds from coming on to scoring for Joe. Any quicker ones for Town?

I think every time, prior to him coming on, Cookie gives him the instruction “Go and score please, Joe”.

“Yes, Gaffer”..
