My view was the goalkeeper came out too early, got himself in a mess and went down too easily looking for the free kick to save his blushes. Correct decision for me but it is one that could go either way.

Harry Gregg, would have left both his own defenders, and the opposition requiring medical attention, but he'd have the ball in his gloves.

Well, he did have the ball in his gloves. Trouble is he was in the back of the net.

Ron Powell was the first goalkeeper I saw at Town during the 62/3 season, and then he played in the 64/5 season till he got injured in a car crash which killed midfielder Ralph Hunt I think. I remember being a very upset kid when my brother told me what had occurred.

No, Ralph Hunt played up front.
Back to VAR, it has finally happened that someone gets injured after no linesman’s flag. Disgrace.

Second time in a few weeks. John Stones got injured at Everton. As you say a disgrace.

It was a long time ago and I was in short trousers 😁. Onto VAR, it was always going to happen. It's such a ridiculous idea, and so pointless. The flag goes up, whistle blown, and play comes to a halt. It must be so frustrating for both teams, but the powers that be don't actually care.

Likewise mate. I too was a very upset 8 year old when my Dad told me what had happened in that crash and like you Ron Powell was the first Chesterfield goalkeeper I ever saw when I went to my first game in 1963. Ralph Hunt died and Ron Powell was badly injured and as I remember there were another couple of players who's names escape me that were in the car with them that evening. I seem to remember Ralph Hunt had scored a few goals for us that season too.

Without googling it, I can't remember who the other two were, although Stringfellow comes to mind, but that could be down to my Mrs talking about the London club a few days ago. We had some decent players around that time although we had our fair share of cross too, nothing changes eh mate, not when you think back a few years.

Pete Stringfellow, Douglas Wragg.

Yorkshire is Yorkshire

Never the twain shall meet.

Thanks for that,I couldn't remember, to be honest. As well as Ralph Hunt dying in the crash, didn't it finish the careers of the others?

It certainly didn’t help but both came back to play, although their careers petered out.
I and some lads went round the ground with a blanket for the collection before the next home game.

And for the Stags haters out there, Mansfield let us have Ivan Hollett (legend) for buttons to help us out.

Certainly not mate, this squad is the real deal. Some lovely football being played, and at this level too. I can't praise the club enough, especially after Saunders and Caldwell. We'd have been better off with Jennifer Saunders and Minnie Caldwell in charge as those two 😂.

I think I remember that and I tapped my dad up for half a crown, but I got a thick ear and a tanner.
I do remember Mansfield letting us have Ivan Hollet cheap, and what a player he was. When he finished in football,he worked for a mining company and he'd chat football forever.

I was training with Alfreton when he was coach there.
He had us holding our arms out sideways and rotating them for ages without stopping. Try doing it, it’s horrible.
What good that did for footballers I don’t know but, as you say, a very nice bloke.
