The game changed when Langstaff came on. I'm willing to bet he will be the first name on the team sheet from now on.

You're on to a winner there if you can get odds

Agreed, silly amount of criticism for one bad (part) game. A repeat in the next game then maybe

Lets be right it was a hopefull punt that dropped just over Williams, there was no thought behind it other than get the ball in the box.

Fully agree, Chris, and as I have mentioned on another post when we play Barnet that will be the 4th game out of 5 against teams currently in the top 10. So, not the easiest of starts and we are averaging the required 2 points a game at this stage.

Quigley was my man of the match yesterday and our game plan seemed to include hitting him long. His hold up play was excellent as was his involvement in both our goals. He led their CBs a merry dance and unless he had run out of fuel I would not have brought him off. Clearly Tshimanga needs game time but he hardly caused them any problems and, without knowing any facts, wonder if he would have been better partnering Quigley rather than Asante. However, Asante had taken his goal extremely well too.

Defensively, we didn't look as strong as we did against Wrexham but, maybe, some of that was that Notts did vary their attacking approach whereas Wrexham were just relentless in repeating what has served them well but continually failing against us. Also, Banks & Oldaker didn't appear to give as much defensive protection and, generally, we're not dictating play as much.

I'm happy with a point, I'd have taken one before the game and we got one. We now move on to what lies ahead and certainly if we avoid defeat against Notts at home and Wrexham away we will have given no ground to 2 of our main rivals at the top end of the table.

Maybe 2 points per game won't be enough for top spot? Is that feasible? I've likened the potential situation with us and Wrexham to Liverpool and Man City where small failures ultimately prove decisive

Folks are suddenly forgeting his quality crosses and his energy up and down his side of the pitch, yesterday he was unlucky that he played the ball across the box and there happened to be a Notts lad there. Lets not crucify the lad eh he's still learning the game.

Wouldn’t have been good enough last year

We finished the game yesterday with 7 out of 10 outfield players from JR tenure

Nobody is crucifying him but the mistake for the first goal changed the game. It wasn't unlucky it was very careless / poor concentration.

I think Horton got distracted, just before the ball reached Horton one of their players had strayed into an offside position in Hortons eye line but the ball deflected to Horton and the distraction caused him to loose concentration. All very unfortunate from our point of view and for them the piece of luck you need when struggling.

It's a good job we took them three points off them then.

Our free kick, went out for our ball, but ref' gave them an uncontested drop ball.

Errr...

A totally bizarre decision compounded by decisions in the previous 15 minutes which tended not to go in our favour incensing one or two of our players (Oldaker particularly).
We went from a position of where we would have put the ball into the danger area for possibly the last play of the game to allowing them with a couple of successful hoofs to put the ball in the danger area at the other end of the pitch. Imagine the furore if that had resulted in a goal.
That decision certainly deprived us
an opportunity to win the game and offered them a chance to do so. Also even though there's nowt on the BBC site didn't we pick up a couple of yellows for pointing out in a 'gentlemanly!!!! manner' the errors of this bizarre judgement, which may come back to haunt us later in the season.

Agree with most of this but I think if there is genuine competition for places Clements for Horton should be considered for Barnet game.

Yes, we appear to have competition for places but I don't know how good some of this competition is. So far, Horton has played well as an attacking full back but like King as a result he will have defensive frailties. I don't know how good Clements is but taking on your thoughts about bringing him in would you also replace King with Sheckleford because I thought King was culpable for their second goal?

Having said that about King, has he now got 3 bookings to his name and another 2 will mean a suspension anyway giving Sheckleford his chance?

I think what Cook will be reflecting on now, now he knows individuals, is whether he will use Jones in the future in similar circumstances, ie, 2 up, missed a chance to go 3, 30 minutes left, opponents bring on fresh legs.

In my opinion Jones is ideal for closing a game out. He's intelligent, a leader, an instructor, good on the ball.

King will get himself banned soon enough as you infer. As for Horton, Cook brought in Clements so presumably has faith in him to give him a game. Doesn't part of a young player's development normally involve resting them?
Second goal King and Williams and Horton all at fault

Mmmmm so you concluded that without a start in the team, time to let everyone get upto speed and the team to get a settled game plan going.

Stirrer, but yep, I've seen and read enough about Jones.
I didn't say he should have brought him on. I'm saying he's maybe seen enough now to influence his future thinking, which he will plan for.

All drop balls are uncontested now. A drop ball would have been right if he'd blown for the head-injury before the ball went out, but I don't think he did.

Baffling refereeing.

He did blow before the ball went out. I was sitting right in line with it, and that's what he was pointing out to our players when they argued with him. Agree the ball should have been dropped and played back to us, but they were never going to do that voluntarily in that area of the pitch, at that stage of the game.

It was when his former strike partner from Gateshead, Scott, came on, we didn't switch on to the change in personnel which lead to the first goal.

Nice to see we have friendly arranged for Monday

Some of this squad needs game time as they hardly fit it in preseason. Squad is probably big enough to make them a regular occurrences.
