Another fine day!!!! Can we get any worse?

I’d hang on to see how much we can lose by in this game before saying that.

Talking of poor performances did the result at Ashover yesterday break any records?

No idea with the Mansfield league…lots of occasions clubs with good Saturday sides end up playing well below their level, overseas playing etc. We’ve struggled Sunday’s anyway for various reasons then lost two or three on the day due to Covid related things. Ended up with basically an under 15 team and a couple of adults I think. I’m a bit out of the loop…only played the first Saturday game of the season and not played since.

Currently 77-5, 4 of them caught behind, just the 451 runs behind!

The County can't really compete which is a testimony to the people in charge and the set up. It really is a sad state of affairs when you recall the great days of success many of us witnessed in the park many years ago. The Gillete Cup Semi-Final against Sussex is one that stands out for me.

They have spent time and money sorting the ground etc so its not such a barren cold outpost to watch cricket but a few glimpses aside we cannot compete with some of the other bigger counties to develop players. Anyone slightly decent is poached elsewhere, suspect Du Plooy and Critchley will be next to go. They've tried being stacked with Kolpak, local only etc and nothing worked. We have the odd good game here and there a bit like the opposition are in this one but in reality the likes of us, Leicestershire, Northants to an extent are fighting an uphill battle against the bigger counties. Doesnt help when we play no cricket of any sort through a spell where kids are off school so their only option is to go to Nottingham or Leeds to watch The Hundred with sides that have no link to Derbyshire at all. Notts team was just a chance to have a few big names and then fill it up with Notts players getting a pay day.

Throw in the injuries etc this season and its been one to forget with the odd bright spot.

A 370 run defeat in 40 overs is a bit excessive, but it don't say much for the opposition when someone bats through for 200+ in them circumstances without considering retiring and letting someone else have a go. Poor show.

Why the struggle to field a side on sunday especially after the merger with Barbs? A bad dose of apathy maybe.

For some reason they felt the need that the three first teamers who had all played the previous day batted top three then various other lads including many Sunday only players looking at the Play Cricket stats came after them. Wouldnt have taken a genius to look at our side and see it was a chance to give a few others a go and still win comfortably.

I think part of the issue is that in previous years most of the Sunday regulars were the younger lads who were happy to spend all weekend playing but as the years have gone by we've lost them to moving away with work, uni, growing up with other halfs\kids etc and its not as easy to commit to playing all weekend. When i first joined i was one of only 2 or 3 that hadnt come through from playing junior cricket at Ashover and it was quite a young team even with me in it! Problem was these lads started going off to uni etc and then moving away with work, girlfriends etc and it partly led to the merger to keep the two clubs going as we were losing a lot of good quality regular players. Probably didnt help either that last weekend was the last week of the summer holidays and the last few weeks have been a struggle to get players out with folk away etc. I would suspect we'll either switch to friendlies on Sundays or try and drop to a lower level in the Mansfield League. The fact we are in Section 1 is down to the fact we've been quite strong the last few years on Sundays.

Yes we had the same problem, plus having players poached fortunately you keep going we didn't have the same resources and folded.

The merger has worked well and probably saved a couple of clubs, i think we would have carried on but not at the strength we have been recently. We got lucky with a batch of lads coming through together who were all very good players and we've not had as many in recent years. Fortunately as well unlike some mergers where it stays as two clubs under one banner everyone has integrated very well and it is very much one club.

As mentioned our issue was not so much players being poached but ending up living for one reason or another miles away! One lad travels from Congleton to play on a fairly regular basis!

Back slightly on topic...DCCC showing a bit of fight, Guest and Dal added 144 so far for the 6th wicket.

Could be worse, could be Sussex who currently have Middlesex 673-5 after just shy of 160 overs in the field!

Derbyshire actually won a game and convinvcingly beating Sussex but I'm a bit confused with the table. How can you win 1.5 or 3.5 of a game as a couple of counties have? Have I missed something during the pandemic?

Didnt it start out with one lot of groups playing each other then changed to three divisions based on initial finishing positions...suspect that caused some strange points etc. Didnt pay an awful lot of attention to it based on Derbyshire being crap.

I think it was along the lines of taking half the points won against the teams in the initial groups into the final group with you. No idea why. When I read about it I thought that’s odd and left it there!

Points were carried forward from where counties finished in the table after the first round of matches

So when the final round of matches started it wasnt a level playing field and Derbyshire actually started above Sussex in the table

Our 9 wicket victory at hove just confirmed that sussex finished bottom of the bottom group lol

Sussex have fielded some very young inexperienced sides this season, sure I heard one had an average age under 20!

sad news but not really unexpected given that there were reports that he was having difficulties trying to recover from several recent blows to the head in recent months

He has said that the advice given to him by the medics left him no real option but to retire to save his future health

All the best in your future career Harvey you are at no age to have to make such decisions on your future well being
