So he is and also appears Critchley is in there. I was pondering going but not sure i'll bother now. Saw earlier we'd signed some lad who plays for Sandiacre and turned out in the seconds to a contract for the 50 over games presumably to replace Critchley.

According to Houghton we are still going for it though in the Royal London Cup lol

I suspect we always go for it...the issue is not about not trying just not being good enough!

Todays team would probably struggle in a Derbyshire Premier League game!

I'm beginning to fall out of love with cricket which, according to the ECB, is being moulded for a new generation.

So I ask, what is the point of supporting a county if all the best players, already removed for test contracts, are now removed to play in the 'Hundred?' I caught a glimpse of this game which the BBC reports on the national news. Teams with American suffixes, gaudy coloured kits and batsman holding the bat as if they were playing baseball. It seems to be popular which vindicates the ECB's decision to go for the money. Meanwhile the pure game, the County Championship, rapidly becoming a second class competition, has survived an attempt to reduce its fixtures to fourteen games. The never ending circuit of test matches mean the best players hardly ever play for their counties as used to be the case and now the 'Hundred' takes precedence. Derbyshire needed Critchley - perhaps their best player - but it seems the 'Hundred' and the money it brings in is more important.

What a contrast to the days when there were just five test matches you could go to Queen's Park and see the best players turning out for their counties, a rare sight today. The County Championship, the pure game, could be on its last legs, a second rate competition, as teams are plundered for their best players, not just for test contracts but now the 'Hundred'.

My Dad once told, there was a good chance of me seeing Derbyshire win the County championship has he had done in 1936. Today, I think, is it worth winning? Perhaps the question is one the ECB would like to encourage as a means of abolishing it all together.

Looking forward to the first day of a 3 day match in the county championship starting in the Queens Park on a Saturday was one of the highlights of the summer

If Derbyshire were bowling you expected 3 or 4 opposition wickets in the first hour and if they were batting you hoped they wouldnt lose too many wickets early on lol

Happy days long gone

Derbyshire aren't helping but the ECB are complicit. No cricket for a third of the English counties for more than two weeks during the school holidays is intentionally ruinous scheduling.

Amen.

I suspect I am younger than you but I grew up with the County Championship meaning something, and Test cricket being the pinnacle. I was 7 when we won the Nat West in 1981, and it mattered.

Now, it means less and less each year. The Hundred is designed to attract a new audience. Fine (we'll skate over the fact that T20 was doing that excellently anyway). What do we do about the middle aged men like me and my mates who are being driven away from the game and who put quite a lot of money into clubs when we go to matches?

Ted Dexter, Sussex and England, has died. Another great name in cricket who I saw play at Chesterfield in the days when England Test players turned out for their counties. John Snow, still alive, was another. I recall we gave him some stick when he was fielding on the boundary but to his credit he took it all in great spirit.

How England could do with someone who can average what he did in the middle order. As an idle thought, given the wickets they played on and the equipment they used, is it fair to assume some of the greats of the past would have been even better these days? What would go against them other than then being more likely to be lbw given DRS?

And perfect gentlemen when faced with a request for an autograph.

Eighteen consecutive days in August - usually the best days of the summer - and Derbyshire haven't played a game. Where is the incentive to buy a season ticket? Why support the county if you cant watch them in the height of an English summer? Lots of opportunites to bring in some cash yet not a whisper of an objection is heard as the slow strangulation of the counties and their importance continues. How long now before even the names of the counties are dropped as unfashionable.

Couple of early wickets again but i wouldnt back us to chase much!

Wouldnt be surprised to see du Plooy off soon, he did well and advertised himself in the Hundred and scored consistently for us. Probably cross the M1 to Notts soon.
