I wouldn't have thought his new wage will kick in till next season, at which point he'll be on lower wages in a much smaller squad with his chances of being loaned out if he's not doing the business much enhanced.

You reckon?

He may have taken the cut now with the guarantee of a contract until summer 2022.

My guess is it will be a smaller cut if it kicks in before the old contract ends...

If it's anything like Football Manager (which I believe to be fairly realistic nowadays) it'll kick in from now. Same as with a wage rise, generally you'd expect a rise to kick in from your next payday, or even be backdated from your last so would expect similar here. Better news if so as will free up a few extra quid which we might well need.

Agree with Blue5 too, didn't see this coming personally, and although he last couple of performances have been better, they haven't blown anyone out the water. Still has much to prove for me, let's hope this season continues so he can crack on with doing so when he's back fit!

I thought Hollis had signed on a low value deal anyway for this year?

Maybe we will see the extension part though.

I'm hoping for Hollis and Weston to sign contract extensions, (based on the performances this season)

I reckon Weston will be let go. I just see Smith as his replacement in waiting.
Life goes on. Whatever happens.

I see Weston getting another deal for 12 months combining playing with the role of fitness coach.

That would be good. He deserves another contract but hearing what JR said about him when he arrived I see Smith having a bigger role in the future.

Would love to see him sign an extension but depends on his salary I guess. He’s 34 and if we are going for a promotion push he may take a significant pay cut to try and finish his career on a high.

I must have misread this forum over the last couple of years

I can’t believe how many folk are chuffed to see Rowley offered a new deal and want to see Weston offered an extension.

Any manager, JR included, will only judge the players he has inherited by how he sees them performing for him within the roles he gives them in the squad.

I fully understand his wanting to keep a 21 year old who he considers fits the style he wants to play. Similarly, whilst I've not been Weston's biggest fan over his previous 2 seasons, there is no doubting he has fitted well into the JR set up so far. Now, if he is prepared, like young Joe, to accept a contract which fits into the club's planned wage scale/budget I can see some mileage in a further deal and, more so, if he combines it with being fitness coach as well.

One thing nobody can argue about is Weston's fitness levels as he rarely is unavailable or has to be substituted because he's run out of steam. Compare that to Denton, for example, who's about to have 10 weeks or so out, had a similar period out at the beginning of last season, has to be protected from playing on plastic which a few teams play on in this league, and I know which one is most likely to be fit enough to play 40 games a season. When it comes to retaining players such matters have to be taken into consideration as well as if a particular player fits into the style of play the manager wants to play.

Over the coming weeks and months it will be interesting to see which players JR wants to keep and if those players are prepared to accept the terms offered. It seems certain players are already on their way out, one way or another, whilst possibly some could already be in discussions about next season with others perhaps having to wait to the bitter end before knowing where they stand.

i'm never one to claim to be in the know but didn't we have to talk dents into joining us full time as at the time he was earning a living as a plasterer whilst playing part time for Alfreton? if so you'd imagine he is not one of our lower wage earners, like you say could be interesting to see what happens over the coming months in terms of further squad shaping

First error of judgement from Rowe for me. If he makes a player out of him he’s the messiah

Which player are you referring to, Rowley or Weston?
