I don’t know, as you say we never will. With hindsight, most of us could decide to do things differently. Just thought it was harsh today he has blood on his hands for way he has dealt with it...

The answer is of course we will never know. But I am glad I could just observe from the sidelines and snipe, not have to make those calls. And I think a lot of those sniping from the side lines are probably glad it wasn’t their call too.

As for the Liverpool match, well it was against a Spanish team and their problems were more advanced than ours but they let their fans go, so they clearly also thought it was too early to lockdown? PPE - the volumes they are using are beyond comprehension, the supply chain to sort it required design and implementation in a world where everyone wanted the same things. Easy to say it should be provided, B****Y difficult to achieve. Next to no countries in the world have enough.

It’s ok though, I read a headline today, article was behind a firewall and I am too tight to pay, that said income tax went up to 80% after WW2 to pay the debt, and mightwe have to do the same now..... so it’s likely to get a lot worse before it gets better..

Well Mr White Line. The 80% you quote was actually for those earning £50k or above it was 27.5% for us mere mortals. These rates were lower than under Thatcher's first years in power. 83% and 33.5% respectively

I think it’s safe to say the government were slow to introduce lockdown and maybe didn’t take it seriously at the start. Abysmal in terms of test and trace and didn’t do as well as could be expected with PPE. So a thumbs down here from me.

I think the measures to protect jobs and business were about as good as could be reasonably expected. A thumbs up here from me

Looking at that, and without wanting to make sweeping statements, but I can’t help feel there’s might be an element of “Toryism” engrained in this. Economy being more important?

As for easing the lockdown, I hope notice has been taken of events in Germany, where easing of lockdown has seen a surge of new infections. They had far fewer cases, deaths and infection rates than the rest of Europe too.
A new hope.

Infections are going to have to increase if there is to be a way out of this without the world becoming bankrupt, it’s just important that the people getting infected aren’t vulnerable

If they had locked down earlier, tested and traced, stopped Cheltenham, stopped the Liverpool match, stopped flights in unchecked, provided PPE and not abandoned care homes AS FAR AS PRACTICABLE IN THE CIRCUMSTANCES , then we could say all that could be done was done.

I’ve edited it with my words in capitals because the quote from you is a reasonable thing to say, but we’re under extreme circumstances so I felt my caveat would make your post a little more fair.

50k or above, in 1945? they were proper rich...

Remember Thatchers first years in power - that was when lots of people with brains were leaving the country. And the country was going down the toilet because people like Red Robbo at BL thought they were invincible,....

By the way, white line is good, centre is a great place to be on most things. Try it some time....

The times reports deaths in care homes could exceed the rate in hospitals.

Tragic.

Time for care homes to be brought back in house. Time for an end of profit over care.

The UK could actually end up with the number of dead being the second highest in the world, after the USA once care home deaths are accounted for.
A new hope.

I thought the same when out running at lunch. Run the same route usually, couple more businesses open, more cars around, more people. Did start to wonder whether people were taking it upon themselves to start to relax. I hope not as that could be bad for us all.

I think post BH weekend things will ease, we will probably follow Italy and Spain and start with a low level relaxation (stage 4 to stage 3 I think I saw it referenced in New Zealand when reading about them this morning)

I think the big jumps are down to S2 & S1, which will likely take months. I really see a potential that we won't be back down the pub at in a football ground this side of Christmas.

Spain's lockdown was much harder than ours, their relaxation brings it nearer our level of lockdown. The press have got a lot to answer for, their pushing for a relaxation of any already more relaxed lockdown, is giving folk the validation they are looking for. The Police didn't help with their clarification of what was within the rules.

I'll be amazed if we don't end up with a second spike. I've yet to hear the adults that work in schools being a consideration in them reopening. I'm not looking forward to being pushed back in with the offspring of those that are currently doing as they please.

Good shout.

Privatisation is another factor in the toxic, free-marketeering agenda that's exacerbated the pandemic.

I do give the government credit for finally announcing total fatalities, though. Should've done it from the start but it does paint an accurate picture alongside the ability to demand others do the same.

Gonna have folk a little bet, mind: when the true figure's revealed it'll be accompanied by a blizzard of excuses and claims care homes were never ignored. Which'll clearly be just another lie...
Never underestimate the stupidity of people

The press at the briefing is becoming a bit tiresome

They get 24 hours to dream up a “Gotcha” question and whoever takes the question has 24 hours to prepare for such questions

Then they end up asking about public advice on wearing homemade face masks

The public ones are far more constructive, not like the continual press ones to try to get the headline, neck on the block etc!
