Spot on.

To emphasise: only one (decent) chippy open a couple of weeks ago (Loundsley Green - and bl**dy enormous fish they do, too!) so told the missus 'If they've a monopoly and are coining it in others'll be reopening soon'.

Sure enough at least three have done that this week.

I've a feeling more and more shops will be finding 'essentials' in their repertoire over the next few weeks...

surprised yours have been closed, ours has been open throughout but delivery only. But agree, its biting hard now and money is running out, and so people will get creative to justify opening. Like people are finding excuses to bend the rules more on exercise - just been watching a piece on surfers in Cornwall and some kayakers having to be rescued by the lifeboat - and what the knock on effect is to potential spread. Selfish ********

PS Loundsley Green was nearest to me when I lived up there, but I always went to Chatsworth Fish Bar. Those were the days. Popeyes a bit further down star of sall for pizza and burgers and star of sall for indian (we knew the guys down there)

And the ones who will be crying out for more help when they have no money if their job goes t*ts up. Of course they may work for supermarkets and be spending their overtime.....

Given I work in hospitality I am buying nothing currently!

But what if they can genuinely afford what they're buying! Let's not call folk out for spending money on things they can afford!

How much do they sell for?

How people run their finances never ceases to amaze me. We are in unknown territory with the realistic threat of potential mass unemployment, you would think people would take the opportunity to put some fat on their backs during these uncertain times. No doubt those living in their own little bubbles, happily spending away, are the same individuals criticising the government for not anticipating the worldwide demand for PPE!

How do you know that! Some of the people spending money may be extremely hard working and, even in the current climate have relative job security, and that being the case, then due to the lack of other spending opportunities, they may have a chance to splash out a bit!
Given the current front line staff, i.e. Medical workers, shop workers, lorry drivers etc etc, are folk who don't usually earn a fortune then why shouldn't they make use of their extra income and lack of other spending avenues.
Don't judge other people's finances and spending habits, when for once, even given the circumstances, those usually watching the pennies might be able to enjoy their incomes a bit more than normal!

Chips shops and takeaways were never required to close in the first place. Mcdonalds will reopen for drive thru and takeaway in a few weeks I'm sure.

They are struggling with social distancing for staff in the kitchens, and until they find a way round that they cannot open.

And no doubt some can, no holiday to pay for, savings in nursery fees and travel, plus overtime and extra work or two jobs (you can be furloughed on 80% and go and get a job at a supermarket or whatever and be better off...)

But there will be some who have no view of the upcoming impact of the government forking out hundreds of billions to keep the economy going, the impact of the redundancies on the economy generally - and they will follow as soon as furloughing ends.

But yes, I apologise for generalising.

Social distancing in many forms of work is simply not viable..for example do you think all those NIghtingale hospitals were built with teams of workers keeping 2m apart at all times...not a chance. Heavy industry, construction and many forms of manual labour require people to work together..the HSE recognise this and new guidelines will be issued soon regarding people working in close proximity. It reminds me of the simpering John Motson, when commenting on the latest score on football matches on the BBC would say.."and those just coming in from the office the score is".. Jesus some jobs, infact probably many of the most important manual ones cannot be done with social distancing, Those in the real world know this, the office fraternity don't.

I've always respected your posts and views but on this occasion I think you're wrong. Many front line, low paid workers are actually enjoying a financial boost in the current crisis, due to them being needed on the front line as it were, and I for one don't begrudge them spending on a few luxuries they might not be otherwise able to afford.

Go to any hospital, supermarket, pharmacy (even Westminster Bridge) to see that social distancing is not happening in lots of places.

In London it does seem strange to be on tube next to someone, to get in a cab etc then to walk down an employee street and have people cross the road rather than be in vicinity of someone

And so you should apologise for generalising, how many front line workers do you think pay nursery fees, have second jobs, saving on travelling fees etc etc.

I think I started by saying it might be people in supermarkets spending their overtime?

There are many reasons why people might feel they have extra money to spend. Equally there are many who are worrying about how long their job will last and how they will survive the next few months....

Absolutely, but if you were running the owner of the brand in the UK and Ireland you wouldnt want to open unless you could show you were looking after staff, people love to have a go at MacDs....

Front line worker being a nurse? or a lorry driver? or a supermarket worker?

I know all three and I would say 3/3 pay nursery fees, 1 of 3 has a second job, all three pay travel costs.

But I dont believe that its only front line workers on overtime buying these things. I imagine a bunch are being bought by people who arent getting a holiday overseas, and some being bought by people who are bored at home....

In places like Hackney how's it being observed?

Very well it seems.
First weekend was worst and prompted Vicky Park to close for a couple of weeks but reopened and very quiet all over.

Worst is Knightsbridge area which still has the parade of overpriced super cars drag racing or slowly driving up and down by kids spending daddy’s millions.
With the Police not interested.

I imagine it went like this...

Sainsburys are open - some of what they sell is essential and some isnt...

They are having Argos collection points in their stores, most of that wont be essential....

Why the F*** are we closed then when some of what we sell is essential too....

OK, stick some tape down, sort out a queuing system, get some anti bac and paper towels near the trolleys. Off we go...

(Last bit will be way more complex to maintain social distancing for staff, delivery protocols, cleanliness and safety of other areas such as tills, card machines, etc etc but you get my point).

Thankfully we dont have to make a decision because let me tell you, £4m out and NIL in doesnt half increase the pressure to find ways to open if you can....

People with half finished extension/ building work can’t be locked down.

Leaks in pipes, plumbing and heating issues, basic building maintenance roofing issues

Thanks, in return then I would say if you think the risk is minimal I can introduce you to a few people who work in ITU and have been amazed by the contagiousness of the disease.

Is it condescending or just informed?

PS Recently? I can do condescending any time, however, I will admit to being a bit stressed....

Don’t worry, he knows all the experts in the capital, owt he says is gospel for London. “If you can afford it, get it done”

As we suspected: https://www.msn.com/...ocid=spartandhp

To put it in Town terms, a Carson-esque 'eyes and ears' on the inside or, perhaps, Coe like cronyism?

Either way I look forward to all those advocating Brexit to rid ourselves of such shady unelected officials reacting with equal outrage...

Y'know how some turdblossoms post 'Only joking...didn't mean it...just winding up' style stuff after being dick-slapped on the forum?

Well… https://www.dailymai...t-disaster.html

Yep, same for B & Q.
I missed the reporting of the Hancock interview when he was asked the specific question. B & Q, and presumably lots of other similar stores, were never instructed to close but did so anyway.

So, my nearest store is Sutton 5 miles away and I can presumably just jump in my car and buy things of a non essential nature.
