Never been able to understand why folk've had finger wagging from the Plod for, say, visiting a park but I've seen blokes continuing to build extensions throughout.

PS: I see medical professionals are now suing the government over the lack of and mixed messages regarding PPE. There're claims some have been pressured into silence over the issue, too. Would one of those builders mentioned be allowed on-site without his hard hat and high viz? So why should it be different for nurses...

I think its the rules Chris - only go out if you have to, exercise from home not drive to a park, work from home if you can and if you cant practice social distancing.

So driving to a park to exercise is not within the rules but building an extension (which by definition you cant do at home unless it is for you!) can be done as long as you exercise social distancing....

Hence why Bovis reckon they can return to work next week but their trades people dont think they can.... its within the acceptable in terms of doing it, but can it be done safely...?

We are supposed to be having a new kitchen started next Monday. Old one ripped out, wall down, decent sized job, should take 2-3 weeks. This obviously isn't going ahead as for a start we cant get in touch with anyone at Howdens to get the kitchen delivered, lock down, all of us at home etc.

My builder has contacted me today saying he can get the kitchen as Howdens are still open and he would like to start on 11th May and I'm not sure what to do. We can separate ourselves from the area so not coming into contact with the builders but should we? It will also be a nightmare with us all at home (Me, wife 2 kids, 4 and 6) and trying to work. But, I appreciate he is keen to go as it is his income, I also really want it doing as our current kitchen is a nightmare. Really not sure what to do. My instinct says go for the beginning of June and see how things are then.

I'd say if you can completely avoid that room for the duration of the install, not pass through, not go in, not touch, then go ahead. If you cant, wait. Plus of course if he is missing anything that he finds he needs, getting it might be an issue!

How much do they sell for?

How people run their finances never ceases to amaze me. We are in unknown territory with the realistic threat of potential mass unemployment, you would think people would take the opportunity to put some fat on their backs during these uncertain times. No doubt those living in their own little bubbles, happily spending away, are the same individuals criticising the government for not anticipating the worldwide demand for PPE!

And the ones who will be crying out for more help when they have no money if their job goes t*ts up. Of course they may work for supermarkets and be spending their overtime.....

Given I work in hospitality I am buying nothing currently!

Just think of all the kids. Mine has just gone up a full size in shoes. As Clarke's/Klinks are closed having to buy cheap rubbish from Tesco's. Can't get his insoles from the hospital so his feet and knees are hurting him. All the work done on his feet and knees will be undone and he'll be back to square one

If you know what size then you can buy from Clarks online? Doesnt help with the insoles but at least you can get the better quality shoes. We realised we had no warmer weather clothes for our little one so ordered a load of stuff from M&S online and had it delivered within a few days.

Clothes not a problem. I wonder if you can buy a foot measuring thing like shoe shops use. It's the width that's critical for him. I think he's an E or F at the moment. However it fluctuates between the two

So in your view, how does the B & Q Board justify its actions with respect to the 3 rules?

If you’re able to afford it get it done.
Risk seems so minimal.

If supermarkets are open, some shops, taxi drivers still working and London Underground still open .....

Yeah, I get all that Ian, and I'm not saying one's right or the other's wrong. It just smacks of the mixed messages folk've been getting when two blokes can be working side by side on a site whilst a couple of walkers can be rebuked even though they're yards apart.

But anyway, for the record both the roads and town center are tangibly busier today. As Derby Road seems to've been for several days, infact. And if anyone wants a chuckle check out the latest 'Private Eye'. A taster: picture of Bozo with the caption 'My illness has left m immune...to criticism'.

Clarkes have a page on their website about doing it at home :-
https://www.clarks.c...eandfit-at-home

Also loads of measuring things available on Amazon.

We've had our electric garage door serviced. The guys who fitted it sent out a letter asking if we needed it doing, it had started squeaking and the lad had managed to do something to one of the remotes to stop it from working, so we bit. Back to running as quiet as a mouse, remote reprogrammed, and one local company with a bit of income.

If you can make it work, don't be put off doing it.

The next job on our list is a proper loft ladder, that one is a no-go.

I'd agree on that - I'd also say making up the rules for something no one has had to deal with, whilst balancing the needs of health and some semblance of economic activity is an absolutely impossible one and was never going to be perfect. I say that as I am writing our procedures and controls for reopening, and we are already having debates (quite heated) about temp checks on arrival, use of masks for staff, hand sanitiser in rooms, why we cant put cleaning products for guests to use etc etc. And I only have 17 sites and 1500 staff to worry about in one industry! We do have diff brands and the one franchised brand we use (US co) wants different to our own thoughts - which differ to our parent companies views as they operate some hotels in Singapore and Malaysia (and one in China...)

I imagine it went like this...

Sainsburys are open - some of what they sell is essential and some isnt...

They are having Argos collection points in their stores, most of that wont be essential....

Why the F*** are we closed then when some of what we sell is essential too....

OK, stick some tape down, sort out a queuing system, get some anti bac and paper towels near the trolleys. Off we go...

(Last bit will be way more complex to maintain social distancing for staff, delivery protocols, cleanliness and safety of other areas such as tills, card machines, etc etc but you get my point).

Thankfully we dont have to make a decision because let me tell you, £4m out and NIL in doesnt half increase the pressure to find ways to open if you can....

Well I assume if they were planning to have it done they can afford it - although the impending recession and uncertainty might have me holding on to cash where I could...

As for risk seems minimal.... these people are coming in your house, you have no idea what they do outside of that time with you, they may not be sticking to the rules, they may not be social distancing, they could already have the disease but be asymptomatic for now. So the risk is there - minimised if you can have no potential cross contamination either with them, the air they have breathed out or the surfaces they have touched.

Where are they going to go to the loo? what about drinks, are you going to provide any? do they need to use a common area to access the room they are working on? We have contractors in one hotel - the only way we can do it is by considering all these questions. I forgot smokers, as I am not one. We have had to put designated smoke break times (with a 45 min gap) for contractors versus own staff on site.

If you want to learn Risk Management to go with your sports science stuff, happy to help...

Might be for those that way inclined, give me a complex finance problem any day. We arent all proficient with tools, or more likely not confident in our ability to be proficient with tools, and I wouldnt want a loft ladder to fail when I was on it...

I used to work for a company that made them and tech director and sales director could fit them blindfold - but not for me!

Spot on.

To emphasise: only one (decent) chippy open a couple of weeks ago (Loundsley Green - and bl**dy enormous fish they do, too!) so told the missus 'If they've a monopoly and are coining it in others'll be reopening soon'.

Sure enough at least three have done that this week.

I've a feeling more and more shops will be finding 'essentials' in their repertoire over the next few weeks...

Thanks, in return then I would say if you think the risk is minimal I can introduce you to a few people who work in ITU and have been amazed by the contagiousness of the disease.

Is it condescending or just informed?

PS Recently? I can do condescending any time, however, I will admit to being a bit stressed....
