I see your point and you won’t be alone. I’m afraid that is how government(s) get away with it.

I’m really not being snide here, but you do post quite a lot here so you could substitute that and read a few trusted sources. It doesn’t take that much time to read a few news items. Other than that I’m not sure what to recommend.

Fair point, well taken. I pop on here 2/3 times a day usually between brews/ coffees to get a break from work and catch up with what’s going off. But yeah could probably spend some of my time more wisely.

Caught a bit of Mastermind on the box earlier that’s about my lot for tonight unless I finish up what I’m doing now early enough

Meanwhile in the fake news world, oil prices have gone negative - that would be a mega story in normal times

Not taken your own advice in post 1332 yet?

I was thinking of getting a few barrels. Do you want in? Can get a council garage up New Whitt for £12 a week.

I’ve looked it up, 1 barrel = 160 litres

I’d say I could store 500 barrels in the back yard which would give us a profit of > $16000 at -$37 I could also fit another 50 in my cellar but I’d have to get rid of my 4996 tins of baked beans which could squeeze my margins!

I think we can buy a dozen garages at that profit and then store a load more. Is the Chesterfield Canal navigable to a mid-sized oil tanker?

Don’t tell Islaw1 until we’ve bought them, or he’ll be buying and storing them in his empty hotel rooms and the price might rise (go less negative). He thinks its fake news at the moment so he might be slow on the uptake

The current government are borrowing whatever it takes to shore up an economy facing meltdown.

Just as the Brown government did after the worldwide financial crisis of 2008.

Neither had any choice.

However I wonder if we'll be hearing any acknowledgement or apology from those who've spent the last ten years trashing Labour for what the Tories are now replicating...

Was that when the country was left bankrupt Browns government left the message in Downing Street saying the money was all gone?

Funny how you remember a tongue-in-cheek note from ten years ago but mountains of recent lies don't seem to register.

But anyway, we both know this is a wind-up so I'm not gonna bother educating you on the worldwide economic crash, triggered by the US sub-prime markets trading toxic debts, which GB helped address. Infact many believe led the way in addressing.

I'll instead eschew political alliances to acknowledge and applaud Sunak adopting a similar approach faced with similar problems. Which'll probably leave the country facing similar debts, too.

Of course it'll be interesting to see how those debt's are dealt with. Because his predecessors not only politicised Brown's actions to the hilt - despite advocating even fewer financial regulations themselves - but imposed the very austerity that's exacerbated the current crisis.

I say the costs of Covid should be shared accross the board, with no benefit cuts for some alongside tax cuts for others. Meanwhile no right wing politician or representative of some suspiciously funded lobby group should ever advocate public service cuts again.

So are you with or against me in that, pal?

I think that's optimistic in the extreme. When this initially kicked off some experts were saying it'll be a year before normal life resumes, I like most I suspect, thought..yeah right..but I can totally see that now.
How on earth the leisure industry etc gets back to normal I've no idea. Eating out, drinking in pubs and bars and general interaction with family and friends has changed for god knows how long to come!
And foreign travel and holidays abroad will be 12 months at least I think before anything like normality resumes. But all just opinions at the moment!
East stand second class citizen.

I’ve noticed a few more shops opening including coffee shops (takeaways only) in Kings Road (don’t live here- I wish! But been working a bit in the area).
As soon as Schools open it will be a big game changer of course. Once that happens it will be staggered from then.
My kids school has sent a message to parents (maybe irresponsibly-who knows)? Saying to be prepared for a potential reopening after current lockdown -but saying whether kids return is voluntary and no fines will be issued etc.

Got to be positive though haven’t we

Isn’t this the problem with the Labour Party though? Then and now if you make a comment about immigration your at best a bigot or at worst a Nazi, even old ladies who’ve seen their community changed beyond recognition in the blink of an eye

Especially when, especially in the north these are traditional Labour voters, seems to me that Labour is either the Momentum element or the often used term “Metropolitan Elites” with very little in the middle

Maybe this new guy will change this

Hundreds of thousands of immigrants are currently manning our public services, our supermarkets, our transport infrastructure and delivering parcels to isolated households.

I make no distinction between them, indigenous workers or teachers in my thursday evening applause - is there anyone that does?

Again a refusal to accept that immigration causes problems in communities, that’s why the Labour Party is destined for more years in the wilderness

I don’t think the Tories are opposed to hundreds of thousands (really?) in vital services, nor am I, but tens of thousands of unskilled single males from totally alien cultures?, that’s why a sensible needs based immigration policy is what we are aiming for, post EU

Well there is obviously one person who frequents this forum who makes the distinction. I know you don’t appreciate green/reds but I gave you a green to test the water and it’s been removed

latest figures show 153000 out of the 1.2mill nhs staff identify as not british.
the govt have extended any permits that expire before nov for 1yr so the foreign staff can concentrate on the covid battle. not quite as appreciative as you seem to be.
