Who is going to get them up to speed ? I don't know wether you noticed but Boris personally thanked and named 2 nurses for giving him 24 hour care. With simple mathematics you might be able to work out that most Intensive care staff are working flat out and doing 12 hours on and 12 hours off shifts. If there were spare staff then get them in now to relieve those working 12 hour shifts, fill your hotels. Where are all these extra staff coming from to staff these Nightingale Hospitals. Why haven't nurses been brought upto speed ? Why haven't retired people been brought in to fill the gaps that are obviously already there.

There was a training event at the Nightingale before it was due to open - they had brought trainers in from all over the country.

The reason it’s not being used, from the agents booking hotel rooms for the staff who are working it, is that it has not been needed. There are a few there now, not many. If you lived near London and saw the interviews with locals connected to it, you might know more. Or you might not believe the right wing media supporting this publicity stunt...

Sigh...
Stay Home. Stay Safe.

Not just fake news, but entire news organisations are fake now.

And now he halts payments to the WHO.

A classic Trump diversion - the bloke who met the pandemic with claims of an 'over in a fornight Democrat hoax' now accuses apolitical experts of mishandling the crisis.

The day after turning a Covid press conference - which should've focussed on his nation having the world's worst death rates - into a political PR stunt.

Yet now it's not just Americans who'll suffer his arrogant incompetence.

I watched a Sky News report of a southern US church still full of folk worked into a frenzy by an unrepentant and completely parodical preacher last night. Perhaps they get the president they deserve; those around the world relying on the WHO don't have that choice...

So Gove's daughter recieves a Covid test whilst countless frontline staff are still waiting.

Apparently him getting his face in front of the cameras is more important than them being at work.

Yeah, must've been murder for him missing out on all that attention at the same time Johnson's sidelined.

Either way it'll take any thursday evening applause on his part to whole new levels of hypocrisy...

But Chris, the people flanking a politician at our daily conferences are also apolitical experts. They too are being accused of mishandling the crisis - by you.

For all their complacency, incompetence and false claims in other areas I applaud the government's financial support.

But you're right - how we pay for it will be key.

Ten years ago the tories weaponised the worldwide financial crisis. Instead of blaming their friends in the City - and bearing in mind Cameron had himself called for fewer regulations - they dubbed it 'Labour's recession'. Before implementing largely ideological austerity whilst handing tax cuts to millionaires (as Alexei Sayle told us 'the banks didn't crash because there were too many libraries in Wolverhampton').

I'm prepared to extend my thursday evening support to my wage packet. If it takes an extra tenner a week for properly funded public services so be it. Or twenty. Or even thirty. Let's see how many of those who clap their hands for the NHS are also prepared to put them in their pockets...

I think you're right here. Would be naive of anybody not to anticipate a level of hardship off the back of this, to what extent who knows but i'm fully expecting we will be haing to pay for this for years to come. And if the governments financial support helps keep roofs over heads, keeps people in business and allows tot economy to restart as quick as possible then I guess that is a sacrifice worth making.

On a side note - anybody see the Tory MP on GMB this morning get absolutely pulled to shreds by Piers Morgan? I'm not a massive fan but he went after her, and rightly so. Turns out she was the Social and Care Sec - and didn't even know how many frontline staff had died so far.

It's not the 1st time i've seen an MP from either side appear on GMB and stutter and dodge their way through an interview. Surely it does them more harm than good appearing on there, it was embarassing. I was cringing for her

I posted it about 20 pages back but they really are a nation of thick people so this doesnt suprise me.

It's not a massive suprise to see that they have ended up with Trump when you see the religious nut jobs going off, people out licking public transport and the rest thinking it is all a big hoax.

We think we've got problems over there, some of the stuff i've seen suggests them lot are on another planet let alone another continent.

As a slight aside the two nurses were from Portugal and New Zealand, what with Johnsons Brexit approach and Tory polices regarding nurses and non nationals he's lucky they were around to look after him!!

Are you really comparing alleged hypocrisy on my part to Trump's deranged duplicity, Dave?

Seriously?

As I clearly said in an earlier post the same experts so often derided by cabinet members over the last four years (the ridiculous Reece-Mogg trashing a top neuro surgeon live on air during the election, for example) will've offered a range of options and outcomes which politicians will've then chosen between.

And let's remember I've said nowt their frontline colleagues haven't repeatedly confirmed themselves.

Nah mate, those sharing platforms with Johnson's crew have shown a professionalism all too often beyond those standing alongside them. But I still say they're being set up as patsies should applause turn to boos...

No, not seriously. Trump makes Dr Strangelove look sane. Whether he has a point on this though does, I think, require some research. He has obviously been advised by an expert that the viewpoint will not make him look (even more) inept and ignorant.

What I'd like to see is an example of our government failing to act on expert opinion for political reasons. I'm sure that when the post mortem happens then many mistakes will be highlighted and it will transpire that our experts at times deviated from other experts' views around the world.

Y'mean this:

Following on from this:

Okay, Morgan's a self promoting pantomime villain who revels in shouting people down. But when faced with government representatives who just repeat statements like some pre-programmed hologram fair play for pressing them in a way few others will.

I saw that last week, worryingly they thought it possible that virus spores had remained dormant in the body and then re activating later.

That’s been rubbished as poor testing procedures though

G20 nations suspending debt payments for “developing nations”.

Also, the W.H.O at the new year said there is little evidence of human to human transmission of the virus. In Jan they said there was no need to restrict movement of people, between countries. It’s not just politicians who changed their stance with changing medical and scientific data available at the time

So the health ministers view that poor testing is worse than no testing does actually have some validity?
