The difference is that the USA and Britain, despite trading with China, is not afraid to criticise its human right's record. So why has the WHO praised China's response to the virus - now being outed as deceitful - and keeping schtum on criticism?

China is the second biggest financial contributor to the WHO. The first is the USA whose contribution of $100 million dollars has not been forthcoming. China is the piper presently calling the shots. Hence, Bruce Aylward's embarrassing and cowardly, see, hear and smell no evil interview, revealing the WHO will stay silent for the money.

I do think that after virus is over, the west will have to rethink it's relationship with China but a China cut off from trade will be a dangerous China. They have to be engaged.

You don’t hear Trump criticising human rights in China very often, he loves a strong authoritarian leaders; it’s always about trade and he blows hot and cold on that

President Xi had a state visit in 2015 with even more trappings than Trump got and there was hardly a murmur. I’m sure human rights cropped up.

It’s quite possible the China will save our bacon when all this is done - so we better be nice to them

However, at the same time as this ruling, China approved the use of bear bile to treat coronavirus patients.
Bear bile - a digestive fluid drained from living captive bears - has long been used in traditional Chinese medicine.
The active ingredient, ursodeoxycholic acid, is used to dissolve gallstones and treat liver disease. But there is no proof that it is effective against the coronavirus and the process is painful and distressing for the animals
Brian Daly, a spokesman for the Animals Asia Foundation, told AFP: "We shouldn't be relying on wildlife products like bear bile as the solution to combat a deadly virus that appears to have originated from wildlife."

I only read the first bit about the cats and dogs thing.

Bear bile? F@ck me. That’s unbelievable. I’ve just read something else about it. Look at this one.

I think you are right on this. No amount of legislation will stop these wet markets. These culinary delights go back centuries and were reinforced with the cultural revolution when thousands starved to death.

That’s more like it.

Thirty years ago China was a mainly backward rural country and it still is in many parts. These people flocked into mega cities and bad habits continued, but in more built up areas. It take at least another 30 years before it is suppressed. Now I’m not making excuses for China, far from it, but looking at some Western habits might help aid understanding.

Rural people in the UK used to live with their animals In close proximity less than a hundred years ago and people still go out fox hunting today. Tourists flock to bullfighting in Spain (about the only thing that kept it alive in the 80s). In France the capture and eat songbirds by putting glue on branches. Battery farming particularly in the US, at least they dip them in chlorine before being sold.

As I said, but by bit. If they don’t stop the human rights abuse, and improve animal welfare then withdraw some investment. Serve notice on duties. Pressure must be applied, and if they “call our bluff” then act on the notice served for duties.

Standby for another state visit for President Xi when/if this ever ends.

Which could be interpreted as the result of Trump's withdrawal from international involvement. Him turning America's back on treaties and organisations that've offered some sort of stability.

At the same time China's been increasing investment and therefore influence throughout the World.

I don't know how accurate China's figure are. And no one will be surprised if they've silenced those telling the truth. It"s something they've been doing for years - years which saw western governments queuing up to trade with them regardless.

However we know for a fact that early lockdowns and mass testing works. The early intervention ignored by a Trump who's now seeing his own country suffer the worst figures of all.

I hope the WHO aren't going to become another scapegoat for those seeking to absolve him from that truth...

Do they just eat all that stuff for medicinal purposes or also for the taste/pleasure?

Mind you over here it’s also pretty horrible the way we treat animals - ripping foxes apart for sport etc (but thankfully we don’t eat them)!

Testing and tracking, as in South Korea and Germany seems to be very effective. Something that ought to have been done here, and questions asked why it wasn’t

Both unfortunately

If you have ever been in an old fashioned Chinese apothecary shop it’s a nightmare, bits of this, bits of that. Unless it endangers species (like Pangolins) it isn’t much different than testing lab animals, both disgusting and I ain’t no tree hugging, snowflake vegan type.

Those countries are well organised and spend heavily on social care and heath. We are a poor 11th within Europe

It also exacerbated by our laissez faire leader, for instance disappearing to Chequers for a drunken, bag-off weekend with his girlfriend rather then holding a COBRA meeting at the end of Feb. They should’ve panicking well before then.

It does make you wonder who had the initial inspiration to actually go out and try it and why.
Was somebody sat in the equivalent of a 'Spoons' during the Ding Dong Do Dynasty bemoaning the state of the Xarling and decided has it tasted like bear dung he'd try some bear bile.

Some of us are, have been and will continue to ask those questions, my friend.

Problem is we'll probably see the pro-millionaire media ignore them, portray Johnson in the Churchillian terms he's always cultivated and accuse anyone disagreeing of some sort of treachery.

The answer, though?

Probably a mixture of Cummins' 'herd immunity/who cares if pensioners die' attitude, the complacency of a huge and recently acquired majority and the fact we started the crisis a hundred thousand NHS staff short of what was needed for a 'normal' flu season.

I mean, if we've not enough people just to man the wards, who exactly's gonna do hundreds of thousands of tests?

Probably for the same reason as they though taking mercury was a fantastic idea along with bleeding, leaches and acupuncture. Funnily enough some of the latter do seem to have uses.
