Lol sorry you are what you are. What group are you? Not that it matters. At least you donate unlike most on this board who can't be bothered to get off their backsides and do something good. It's a lot easier to let others do it for them, as long as it's there if they ever need it. Selfish

There is no valid reason not to do it. Have donated bone marrow twice. Too old now and I'm off the registar now. On the organ donation register since I was 18

It’s voluntary. That’s a valid reason. Maybe not to you. But it is.

Good friend of mine has a phobia about needles. He has to effectively be sedated to allow him to have one for life saving reasons. So he is out.

Everyone’s life is different. Just because they aren’t the same as you doesn’t make them wrong.

So you and your friend fall into the 5% that can't on health grounds. The rest of what you say is rubbish. There is nothing in life that stops you giving. I wish people would be honest and just say "I can't be bothered". The only true reason. One day demand will outstrip supply. The falling number of donars will be unable to supply the growing population. They have tried to reduce the time between donations to increase stocks but have found doners can't maintain their iron levels. The trials have now been abandoned. The donars as they stand cannot give anymore. We need more donars

We do. Banging on and making people feel bad for not doing won’t achieve it. Making them feel good for doing will.

I don’t understand why they don’t have an always open donating centre at hospitals - all those visitors, outpatients, etc - potential donors who are probably most inspired at that point...

Apart from the fact that I'm still currently an outpatient, I'm ruled out now because I've had a blood transfusion. I would understand if I was not allowed to donate for say 5 years after receiving blood products and had to undergo a blood test before restarting donations, but not ruled out forever.

You can't give blood after receiving blood products because some deseases can lay dormant for years and are undetectable. Just think how many tests would be required to cover every illness. Better to not take chances.

Have you thoroughly thought through your logic?

Think about it. The person who donated the blood that Marcia received is possibly still donating, donating blood that may or may not have diseases in it that aren't currently tested for.

No, but you've told us why you think the rule is in place. It doesn't match with the blood transfusion website. vCJD risk is the only reason given there, and the wording is 'not currently able'.

I'd suggest your 5% medically unable is wrong. 20% of women and 3% of men can be ruled out on iron levels alone, before we even start with the lengthy list of other exclusions. I'm one of the 20%, permananently fighting to get my levels sensible. Even if I get them up, I'm so at risk of them plummeting again that I shouldn't donate when I'm in the 80%!

As for the ease of donating. My OH was a regular donor for many years, they had a spell in the late 90's where they made it so hard for him to fit it into his life he gave up. It has dropped off his radar now, until he is able to just turn up when he is free and someone publicises that (rather than the guilt trip ads they run) it'll not be something he thinks to do again.

My appointment at the Proactive for 2nd March has been ‘regrettably’ moved to another location 🧐 feels... curious.

I’ve rescheduled my second platelet donation from last week to mid jan.

The first time all went pretty well - I felt very overwhelmed by it all some of the thing the nurse told me beforehand. I did a double donation as it was my first time. Slightly uncomfortable being on there for an hour and Did feel a bit faint at the end but can’t wait to go again

Shouldn't feel feint really as all your red blood cells are returned. Hence why you can donate every week. However we are all different. It just never effected me personally. Where did you go Sheffield?

Yes Sheffield donation centre. It’s not every week you can donate it’s a minimum of 14 days and feeling faint seems to be a recognised side effect http://platelets.blo...nation-process/

It didn't suit me. My veins were not able to carry out out donations consistently. So after a few sessions I returned to donating blood and it was about 20 year's ago and then it was every week. Blood donating went the the other way from 6 months down to 4 months. Anyway a big welldone to you.

I didn't know until yesterday but it costs the Blood and Transfusion service over £120 for each blood donation. It's not handed out free to hospitals either, they have to buy it.

You thought it was all free? There's wages, room hire charges, transportation costs, test costs and consumables plus numerous other costs. All that happens is money is moved from one part of the NHS to another
