Gonna sound twee but cricket was the winner.

You just can't write drama like that - and watched by millions for free!

Chuffed to bits we won, absolute respect for how NZ handled themselves - on and off the field - and a thoroughly enjoyable tournament from start to finish.

One thing, though.

This England team have the batting and bowling to destroy opponents - but their Achilles heel is knocking those ones and twos that keep the scoreboard ticking.

Summat for Bayliss's successor to work on.

Ones and twos is what Root is there for but he decided to have a mare yesterday of all times.

At least the pitch inspector will not have to move far from his office to inspect the wicket at Lords

40 wickets in 2 days and part of a session in a TEST match at the HOME of CRICKET

I wonder if it will be the same one who was called to the Queems park after the Northants match

40 wickets in 2 days and part of a session in a COUNTY match on an outground

I somehow doubt it lol

In fairness Ireland's batting lineup is woefully short of test standard so their wickets are always liable to fall quick and England will be in England, playing rash and unnecessary shots even when they know they shouldnt be.

If Australia bat half decent it'll be a long ashes series because their bowlers are going to have a field day.
If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything!

From what i've seen of it the pitch was fine. First morning it did enough and England's batting was woeful, this morning its done all sorts and Ireland were exposed. In between that there was over 500 runs scored at a decent rate including 92 by a guy who normally bats 10 and has barely made double figures for his county this season.

Nearly 400 runs were scored in the Park on the second day

From what i saw of the highlights from there the day all the wickets fell there was some very ordinary batting as well including Godleman effectively trying to tee off like it was a T20 game.

I thought they did not have pitch inspectors anymore.I heard each 4 day game had a manager who is responsible for all aspects of the game. The manager for the game in the park was Dean Cosker the ex Glamorgan spinner.

Good point made by Vaughn on TMS - the test set-up needs a fundamental look at itself in the same way the white ball one did four years ago.

We can perhaps excuse mixed-up minds after the CWC. We can perhaps understand the arrogance of thinking Ireland would be a steady warm up. We can perhaps even accept the 'shall we/shan't we' attitude towards batting.

However all too often it's been the bowlers getting a 'thirty-summat for three or four' batting line-up out of jail.

PS: don't think Root's a very good captain, either.
Never underestimate the stupidity of people

Ah the good old days when if 4 wickets fell before lunch on the first day in the Park a car parking space was made available for the arrival of Tony Locke. And if no excuse could be found to send the intrepid pitch inspector, then we would be hit with the double whammy of Syd Bullar

Syd Bullar a name from the past sent to end the possible England career of Harold Rhodes something he did by noballing him for throwing against the South Africans

At the time I suppose Bullar would have been hated as much as one David Ellary some 30 years later

Love him or hate him, but that was a brilliant knock from Smith.

Taking customers so probably need to be relatively restrained (at least until 3/4 pm when the beers have had an effect).

Was there in Melbourne in 2010 when Smith made his debut, was a bit of a desperation pick at the time with question marks over Ponting and a couple of others and it seemed they were trying to squeeze an all rounder into the side but he didnt really look good enough with bat or ball...fair to say he's got better since then!! That said we rolled them over for under a 100 in the first innings so they all looked pants!!

An interesting day especially for the Umpires some shocking decisions. At the start of one over 2lbw appeals and a catch in the slips (bump ball) did for Joel Wilson I thought he was going to throw the towel in his confidence seemed drained.
However the worst decision of the day was by the England medics giving Jimmy Anderson a clean bill of health. How much do they get paid?
