Why we just can't enjoy the ride and accept that what we did in this world cup has brought joy to the country I'll never know.
All this criticism is just ridiculous.

I personally believe that this was just the start of a journey that GS is going to take us on and we should be praising them for the experience of taking us all to a Semi final not picking the bones out of it.

I just think we’ve far exceeded expectation in this tournament so it should be celebrated and I feel the future looks brighter than it ever has after going out of a tournament. You’ll notice the ones who are moaning now are the ones who gave us no chance at the beginning so they look pretty silly to be honest.

You say that, but only 3 of the squad was over 30.

David Seaman age 26.
Paul Gascogne age 23
David Platt age 23
John Barnes age 26
Des Walker age 24
Mark Wright age 26
Stuart Pearce age 28.

That’s a good nucleus of a side that should have improved.

Paul Ince Alan Shearer made thier debut 2 years later in 92. Sheringham in 93.

Even Waddle, Beardsley and Lineker were 29 and had at least 1 more, possibly 2 major tournaments left in them.

Why shouldn’t the above squad have improved (they did Euro 96) while the current one will?

David Seaman was not in the final 1990 squad (Shilton, Chris Woods & Dave Beasant were the 3 keepers cos Seaman broke his thumb just prior to the tournament)

So, in one breath we've 'far exceeded' but in another breath the moaners gave us 'no chance'?

I think everyone believed we'd get out of the group. That leaves three games...is that where we far exceeded, winning two extra games against inferior opposition and losing one? OK..

Perspective is everything. We beat Tunisia by one goal, deep into stoppage time..
We hammered probably the weakest team at the tournament...
Lost to Belgium...
Beat Colombia on penalties...
Unconvincingly beat a Swedish team that turned up with ten minutes remaining, and Pickford made two crucial saves...
We then lost to a fairly ordinary Croatia side...Again, Pickford taking it to extra time with a wonderful save at the death. How did Mandzukic get between two central defenders like that, and then be first to that ball to score the winner; he ain't that quick, but he is mentally superior.

Personally, I can't get carried away with what I've seen. If you think I'm moaning, that's your prerogative; I see it as a sensible analysis. As I said earlier, we'll know in two and four years time. I don't feel remotely silly.

And we failed to qualify for Euro 92 didn't we?

Incorrect, we qualified for Euro 92, it was Euro 2008 we failed to qualify for.

We made the semi final of the world cup! We were one of four teams in the world who were left in the tournament!
Germany, Argentina, Brazil, Italy, Spain, Holland are all teams that have been more successful than us and they weren't there. They were all on holiday whilst our team full of newbies with an inexperienced manager made it to the semi final.
And you want to call it a sensible analysis by playing down this achievement and criticising the way they made it?

Saying we unconvincingly beat a Swedish team is not a sensible analysis. The goalie is there to make crucial saves.

Agree metal and just to add to your response to misnomer.
Tunisia game- we deserved to win but the Tunis were no mugs
Panama-yes weak but the worst team? Possibly with the Saudis
Belgium- looking at the draw Garath knew finishing 2nd in the group was the easier passage to the semis.
Columbia- for me the best night of the campaign. Finally getting that penalty monkey off our backs and that I thought, brought a level of new found confidence
Sweden- in control and dominated the game bar Pickford 3 great saves
Croatia- lost to the better side over 120 mins
BUT plenty of hope for the future. We've got 6 or 7 regulars for a few years to come. We just need an extra bit of quality in the play making department and someone who's gonna contribute with Kane to get a few goals.
Hopefully the future is bright. Roll on euro 2020.

Totally agree with all of that. I for one have enjoyed the journey.don't get this rubbish that we not played anyone. remember we lost to Iceland 2 years ago and came home from Euros. you can only beat what's in front of you and we did that till Croatia game.if Kane had scored a 2ed we would have been in final Imo .not to be but the lads and Southgate can hold their heads high. and we should be proud of them. Looking forward to Euros qualifies now. this team can only get better.

The team exceeded expectation by reaching the semis but...I think the point some are making is we reached the semis because we played Colombia and Sweden. You can say we can only beat what's in front of us but do you think we would have beaten Brazil?

Didn’t he get sent home after going with the squad, being replaced by Dave Beasant after breaking his thumb?
A new hope.

Exactly, mate. It was an easy ride. But, if folk choose to see it differently, I guess that's up to them.

Tunisia, no mugs? We should be taking them to the cleaners, not running out of ideas and relying on a last gasp winner.

Time to put this to bed, for me. People have different opinions. I believe we are very average, and Southgate, as likeable as he is, lacks tactical nouse. The majority on here obviously think very differently. Proof of progression will be seen at the next Euros....

Agree bro, let's all get on the ride and enjoy whatever comes. Was not criticising you, just posted what I thought to the games I watched.

Yes. I do believe that we would've beaten Brazil.
I know, I've left myself wide open for criticism and ridicule but I believe what I believe. Whenever a team put pressure on Brazil they struggled. Switzerland in the 2nd half pressurised them, they held on for a draw then as soon as Belgium pressurised them they caved in.

Exactly my point tho , we are average , you’ve just said it yourself so how is beating other average teams not seen as acceptable in your eyes? What do you want? We are what we are.
