Spireite Karl - put a bleeding sock in it will you?! Just cos you’re a manic depressive (as exemplified by your avatar, on top of your consistently misery guts posts) doesn’t mean you have to force it down everyone else’s throats on here every other post. My god, man. Yes, we were very very disappointing tonight and I have woke up with a hangover from hell and a fight with the missus for being rowdy but I’d like a bit of balance - who thought we’d achieve so much a month ago? I need a bit of cheer right now not yet another bleak autopsy from you.

To achieve anything we had to win last night, we got to the semi final without really playing anyone half decent

Alli biggest let down for me, he wasn't right from the off, HK flattered to deceive

Suppose Southgate should take some criticism though, he should have been able to switch tactics when we were being overrun

HK, the bloke you said was the best striker in the tournament, and truly world class?
A new hope.

How many of this side would have made the 1990 side?

Parker for tripier? Wright for Maguire? Other than that I’m struggling

Ah but the 1990 side was poor in the group stage and had an easy run to the semi: Belgium then a minnow and an unproven Cameroon. The team did not progress beyond that World Cup. There’s a good chance that this one will.

You say that, but only 3 of the squad was over 30.

David Seaman age 26.
Paul Gascogne age 23
David Platt age 23
John Barnes age 26
Des Walker age 24
Mark Wright age 26
Stuart Pearce age 28.

That’s a good nucleus of a side that should have improved.

Paul Ince Alan Shearer made thier debut 2 years later in 92. Sheringham in 93.

Even Waddle, Beardsley and Lineker were 29 and had at least 1 more, possibly 2 major tournaments left in them.

Why shouldn’t the above squad have improved (they did Euro 96) while the current one will?
A new hope.

Correct, we failed to qualify. We also failed to qualify for the 94 World Cup

We qualified for Euro 92 IIRC, but a pair of 0-0 draws against France and Denmark, coupled with a 2-1 defeat to a Brolin and Dahlin inspired Sweden (With Graham Taylor substituting Lineker who was a goal away from breaking the England goalscoring record at the time with a fair bit of time left to play, to much outrage)

I vaguely remember needing to beat Poland in our final qualifier to make it to Euro 92 and think Lineker scored the winner in that game??

It wasn't homophobic though not sure about the basis for the word used.

I'm 39 and this is only the 2nd world cup semi final that I've seen England play in and it's only the 3rd we've ever played in during the history of the competition.

Does it really matter who we played? Of course it doesn't. We got to a world cup semi final and we could well have reached the final with some more clinical finishing in the first half or if we had a little more experience within the team.

Before the world cup started the whole country was expecting nothing from this tournament but GS and the team have galvanised a good feeling and positivity about the national team that I thought would be nigh on impossible a couple of months ago.

Are we guaranteed to win silverware in future? Of course not.

Are we allowed to be proud of the team and the fact we reached a world cup semi final? Absolutely.

The England performance at this world cup was nothing more than par

We beat four teams that were lower in the FIFA rankings than us, lost to one below us and were beaten by one higher.

Say what you want about some of these ranking but they are an indicator
Accentuate th Positive, eliminate the negative

The point I’m making is they didn’t. Partly because the new manager,Taylor, employed a totally different playing style to the one that according to several biographies the players imposed on Robson for the Egypt game. The current side might not improve. I’m heartened however by the way we played in this tournament with 3 defenders encouraged to play the ball out. If we retain Southgate that will not change and mirrors the way the other age teams play. We know that we currently don’t have a world class player but the junior teams show promise. I’ve never seen an England side play as well and in the manner of the U17s when they won the World Cup Final. They destroyed Spain after being 2 down. It wasn’t just the 5-2 thrashing. The style and several individual performances were so great that at least 2 of the Spanish players lost it and literally kicked players off the ball. We appear to becoming joined up across age groups. This is a young side who played well enough in the first half to knock Croatia, a strong team who beat Messi’s mob 3-0, out. There are lots of reasons for hope but we’ll see.

That, in a nutshell, is the point I have been making since the start of the WC. Nothing else really, just that.

He definitely isn't. Anyone can score against dog shít...multiple times last night he could have shot but didn't, and then when the obvious square pass was on, he chose to shoot, poorly at that!

We’ve done much worse in tournaments with allegedly ‘world class’ players in the side. I think we slightly overachieved and overall I enjoyed it. Southgate managed to create something greater than the sum of its parts and his backroom teams work on areas where were strong - things like set pieces - was highly effective and very well done.
The challenge now is how to get those u17’s u19’s & u21’s integrated into the national team when too many of them don’t get a chance at their clubs.
Hopefully the youth players will see the paths taken by players such as Kane, Lingard & Loftus-Cheek and get themselves out on loan to play 1st team football. One thing Southgate has shown is if they work hard, he will give them a chance.
If you tell the truth, you don't have to remember anything.

Totally accepted mate, it's a message board and we all post idiotic things, me more than most, and like others have said I think the browbeating of us via CFC these last few years has gotten us on a downer. Saying that my honest opinion is that Southgate isn't a particularly good football manager, he did what the FA wanted and brought back a bit, actually a lot, of dignity to the job and the way he and the players conducted themselves and for that he deserves all the plaudits he's getting but I thought he was unable to change the way we played. I've not rejoiced that we're out, I'm actually not too dissapointed though because I could see it coming when we played a half decent side. We had a fantastic chance to get to a World Cup final the way the draw opened up but for whatever reason last night we couldn't step up to the plate. It's just my opinion, nothing more nothing less.
East stand second class citizen.
