Has to be Steve Cotterill

has a proven track record at conference, this level and above is the right age and experience and currently out of work. A 40% + win percentage, tough no nonsense knows how to motivate and coach his Bristol City team was a cut above when we reached the play offs under Cooky made us look like boys against men the last home game of the season. Given the situation you're in - and that you're unlikely to be poaching anyone already working in League football, or attracting the likes of Cotterill - if I were Allen/Carson I'd look at someone like Gary Waddock.

He got Aldershot out of the Conference in 2008 as Champions and then got Wycombe out of L2 in 2010/11. He had one terrible run at Oxford and a couple of unsuccessful caretaker roles - he was our boss for a handful of games and whilst his record, on paper, looks poor he also salvaged the career of Adam Webster before Cook took over (by playing him in his rightful position) - Webster is now playing Championship football.

If the money's there you can certainly do better - but I don't reckon it would cost that much to prise him from his current role back at Aldershot.

Took me a while to realise you were one of the pompy fans and not the Sheff Utd fan that sometimes visits here.

That's why I didn't know what you were on about with waddock being caretaker and Cook in charge.

But yeah, shots goin well atm
Here we go again!

Waddock probably deserves a league role. There's enough there to suggest he could do well - plus he is clearly interested in improving players.

I don't know how stable things are at Aldershot, so he might not want to touch the Proact role with a bargepole - but if you want to think outside of people who have previous with the club - as others on here are saying - then perhaps decent up and coming coaches are the way forward?

Got a promotion with Wycombe as well - though they were also relegated from L1, but not surprising given their turnover and lack of outside investment. I was just throwing a name in who didn't already seem to have a link with your club/area.

What about big Sam, he's decent at getting teams out of a mess. He's at the Hilton in Sheffield next month too.

Big Sam with Kev Davies as assistant learning the job. Wishful thinking, not a cat in hells chance Sam would come here

Yeah, I know. Apparently, he's been offered 100k + to go into 'I'm a celebrity get me out of here'.

The fans would forgive Lester almost anything. Would be awful for him to fail but you never know, he just might be a success.

We proper fkd up there...

I'd say the one we didn't move fast enough for is now at Shrewsbury - Paul Hurst, living in Killamarsh, would have loved the gig, took over Shrewsbury when they were in a worst position than us when Caldwell came, saved them and following decent recruitment are doing reasonably well now whilst loaning us a player.

I don't care for many names mentioned, I didn't last time round either but I will say it now Ashley - please, this time, make sure written into the guy's contract is a low contract termination clause. And, if the bloke won't sign it he is not the man for us because he is more interested in what he gets if he fails rather than what he gets if he succeeds.

Other than that I am torn - the unemployed experienced managers have experienced failure and the untried manager is a gamble - but, GC had a level of experience and was a gamble whilst being no where near the right man for the job leaving the next incumbent with a blown budget on backroom staff and players he's signed some of which form a bench for the bench yet contains just one winger who struggles to get anywhere near that second bench.

Talk about being a mess - but, why, oh why, did the board back him to the hilt after last season's abysmal surrender under his new manager bounce?

Hurst has done exceptionally well and the player Shrewsbury have loaned us is one of our best!
