I'm as disgusted as you are with Caldwells abysmal efforts last season. However, I prefer to consign last season to the dustbin of history and judge him on this season when he's had time to get players in and impose his methods. Now 2 defeats in 2 games is bad, but it isn't enough games on which to judge a season. As someone who really doesn't like Caldwells playing system, and having absolutely slated him for the complete mess he made of last season, I have to say that I think we've looked, in patches, like a potentially decent team in the first two league matches. I've seen enough small glimmers of light to change my season prediction from going straight out of the bottom of L2, to staying up round about lower mid-table. Not an exciting prospect, but ok considering the complete shambles that passes for the overall running of the club.

Good post.

have to ask though why were the loanees last season brought in such an abysmal failure?
You have to lay some of this at the manager's door, if he judged them good enough, they weren't; if he never saw them play it was crazy to bring them in.
Since one of them walked out of the club and ended up in Libya, you have to question whether the dressing room is a happy place

Or was that more because his attitude was wrong and he spat the dummy the first time it didnt go his way after coming in?

Caldwell - 9% (2 wins in 22)
Wilson - 32% (18 wins in 56)
Saunders - 37.5% (9 wins in 24)
Cook - 45% (65 wins in 145)
Sheridan - 39.5% (63 wins in 160)

Bring back Saunders

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but makes you wonder if Wilson had stayed in charge I think we would have stayed up

Wilson would not have seen the season out.
He'd had his belly full of double crossing Allen.
No decent manager will sign up for us whilst that clown owns the club.

He signed players for the sake of it, after demanding the approval of "at least 4 players" before he'd agree to take the job.

By early April I think there was only Stuckman of his January/Feb acquisitions having any kind of impact on the first team.

That said, I'm still of the opinion he was sold a pup and despite his criticism of the clubs recruitment structure, he got Branston forced upon him and it's clearly done little to improve his ability to sign a squad of players capable of delivering the formation and tactics he's hell-bent on playing.

Another managerial change is unthinkable, whilst we're still paying off the previous management team, ST sales have dipped and confidence in the team, and those running the club is at an all-time low.

We need to start winning games, fast.

The Grimsby game was a bit immense despite GCs only one game stance. 5300 home fans was decent but we blew the game and then compounded it by losing at Notts. So we may be down to 4500 home fans for Saturday. As you say we need to start winning fast, and put a run together. Just can't see it happening without a couple of good signings, which I also can't see happening! 2 weeks left to sort it. Carson needs to release funds now. GC will have 2 new players in January anyway - JBW and JR

When was Danny Wilson & his backroom staff due to be paid up, I thought most of the backroom staff was already paid up & Danny soon if not already?

Sophocles's green shoots, invisible to most fans, may even exist and it is a point well-made, but Crack's point is both brutal and telling.

Saunders' team was in free fall and he sadly has a past record of starting well and falling apart. We almost certainly did need Danny Wilson to save us, but the then Chairman, for reasons of his own, favoured down over up. Danny wasn't getting the investment, he may or may not have saved us again, but Caldwell was brought in and cut the apparently inadequate parachute and probably simultaneously destroyed several young players' careers. The team that has fallen to earth didn't, like David Bowie, bring us profitable alien inventions. It gave us incompetent wing backs and the slowest back three on the planet. We've lost easily to two teams who have both lost their other match. On Saturday we didn't win a corner. We had a player sent off for fouling Hawkridge who is not a known Usain Bolt. And the only statistic in which we prospered was fouls committed.

It has been suggested that we should give the man in charge more time, but there are a lot of games early in the season. Before we wake up a quarter of the season will be gone. At the manager's current win ratio we'll have ONE win by then. We'll be as good as down ....... and DOWN IS OUT! Maybe we could conjure a Newport, but is there both a Hartlepool and an Orient in this division waiting to dive below us and die?

Clearing gets into full-swing on Thursday with the A-level results. There are plenty of vacancies. Gary Caldwell needs to apply. There's a future out there with his name on it.

IIRC he and Morgan were still being paid their monthly salary "for the first couple of months of this season" or something similar.
