We had a 20 over thrash against a town XI including Ern. P Walker. Andy Kowalski.Les Hunter, remember a lad called Andy Higgins and especially Colin Profett being very handy.

Played against Phil Tingay for Staveley 2s a few years ago and he was diving around in the field like a man less than half his age. Almost took a diving one handed catch in front of the screen at Tibby after running from the mid-wicket boundary.

Mel Machin caught me in a way only a pro.sportsman could, during a tour match in Norfolk he was at Norwich at the time. Saved me having to get a "jug" though.

Phil still going strong for Staveleys one side in 10N now but did play against us in 5n a couple of years ago. Was actually talking about him on Saturday with my dad as they played together at cspo and my dad is sure Phil is older than him so that would put him top side of 65 now.

He's not even the oldest local cricketer. Good knows how old Jim Cowley is these days but he must be well over 70.

Probably wont have come across him as he is more of a DCCL character but the legendary Roy Ling only packed up recently and he must have been top side of 70 but is now umpiring. Absolute gent of a guy and was running some clubs 4th team which cant have been easy when he finally stopped playing. Also there is a guy called Colin Taylor, top quality leg spinner who played at Heanor for a long time and more recently Alfreton. Again must be nearly 70 and played against us last season. Not quite the threat he once was but still fit and still bowling more than decent leg spin. Played against him for the Cross about 10 years ago and faced him....Sunil was saying he does this and that so you can pick him....i didnt have a clue. He could have told me what he was going to bowl and i wouldnt have been able to pick it!!

substitute 'absolute gent of a guy' for 'biggest umpiring cheat in the lower leagues' and you're closer to the truth!

on footballers playing cricket, Ryan Williams was a very good cricketer, played for Blackwell

That's a bold statement. Would you like to put some meat on the bones so to speak to justify your statement

when umpiring his own team he used to cheat

a lot

plenty of people do the same and it is a real problem in the lower leagues of the DCCL, but this guy was renowned for it - ask anyone who's played against him

Define the term cheat, but before you do maybe concider some of the teams you may have played for and decide whether they fall into the same category

not giving obvious and I mean obvious decisions

like I said, this is a major problem in the lower leagues and I am fully aware that every club (including ours) has people who are prepared to give almost anything 'not out' when standing

It's fine to errr on the side of caution (as I believe all umpires should) but not some decisions you see given not out are ridiculous

And what do you mean about the clubs I have played for (only been 3) - you always seem quick to jump on my posts and obviously know who I am whereas I have no idea who you are!

Only really know him from playing against him and more recently he's umpired us in a neutral capacity and never been anything than a top bloke. Appreciate however the joys of being umpired by opposition players or an umpire that traveled with a team, fortunately not something i've had to deal with for a lot of my cricket playing.

Early days having to umpire whilst we were batting was one reason i learnt to score...rather do that than umpire!!

being a top bloke and refusing to give your own men out is not mutually exclusive

there are several people I have no problem with off of the field but make extremely dubious decisions when umpiring

He was probably in shock that one of your moon ball donkey droppers could take a wicket.

Cheat can be a very emotive and uncalled for word when based on opinion.

Yes in the lower leagues against some teams it becomes a case win the toss and umpire second so you can always give one dodgy decision more.

It may appear that I seem to jump on your posts if so the reason being I've known Warfy for years we all know what he is but you taking your moral high ground "look at me " stance grates a little , but to compound things I have also known Roy for years and you couldn't wish to meet a more upstanding chap, pity there's not more like him in the game.
And the next time I see you in a boozer mines a pint and not puffy lager 😊

on Warfy I challenge some of his dafter statements, but nowhere near as much as others do, and as said, people can be fine off the field but the opinion of that individuals umpiring certainly a few seasons ago for WHWR was poor with the C word mentioned by most clubs in the division

it was the cricket stuff you seem to always reply with nonsense to, sure I can remember you on about how many clubs I've played for before (massive total of 3) and then go quiet when I ask who you are

And restricting oneself to one beverage seems stupid, plenty of good 'puffy' lagers as you put it

I'm intrigued now, haven't a clue how many clubs you've played for or who (Holmewood present? ) Hopefully your memories better than mine so you could remind me of the "nonsense " I'm sure you're correct, I'm renowned for it. I'd just like to know which bit.

That Colin Taylor is over 70 I'm sure. I was talking to him when I went out to umpire either last season or the season before when I played a game in 8N for the 2s. He bowled me middle peg with a googly and I had no idea at all.
