I hit him in the face with a snowball circa 1983 at St Mary's, he clocked me called me to him and picked me up by the hair and marched me to the office so the deputy head could give me the strap. He had to leave and told me to tell Reggie what I'd done. Told Reggie I'd been caught throwing snowballs in the school precinct and he told me to clear off and don't do it again. East the Beast we called John - not to his face though.

We had a PE teacher at Newby Borstal, not only a thug, but also a bully.

The Grimleys tv series in the 90s was set in a midlands school of the 70s and had the sterotype PE teacher of the time on the staff

Yes that's him, I got to know him after leaving school and became friends, fantastic fellow.

When I was seventeen he got me a trial with Derbyshire C.C.C.

I wondered who John was scouting for at the juniors match against Mansfield last Friday with his notebook and pen

he actually rang me whilst he was at the match cos he hadn't cottoned on beforehand that Rowley wasn't playing. We were talking when Mansfield scored.

I'm sure John won't mind me giving people a bit of history.
I met him during trials for Derbyshire boys at Lea Green in 1967. I remember we got our 'O' level results whilst we were there. At the time he had had his growth spurt and was a big lad, centre forrad, and not easy to mark. He made it to the Derbyshire Schools first eleven. Our paths then split and he went on to play for Mansfield reserves and he went to college where he met his big pal Paul Fairclough. Paul subsequently managed the England C team and John spent many years scouting and finding players for Paul at top non league level. He's now doing a bit for Saun Dyche and presumably Nicky Law and I don't know whether he still works for Paul.

John is a single figure handicapper at CGC, still going strong.

Joe Rowley was the best player on the pitch yesterday which is awesome yet utterly depressing at the same time.
Guess I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue!

If he was better than all of the Bolton players as well I wouldn't say that was depressing.

Every team we beat are "garbage" aren't they?

When we get beat, we are "garbage"!!!

Why do we have to keep on bringing up and repeating Rule (1) and Rule (2) of these Boards?

So, back to my question then. He only featured once in the highlights - a clever little lofted through ball attempt which didn't quite come off. Where did he play and who does he most remind you of?

Sometimes and it has only been sometimes this season other teams are garbage as you say because we do not let them play as they want

Even Parkinson conceded that we made it very difficult for them

Were they really still using corporal punishment in 1983?

Yes wasn't abolished until 1985ish the vote was the same day as Prince Andrew & Fergie's wedding and most of the Tories who would have voted to keep it were stuck in traffic!

Bolton didn't look bothered in the first half and we took advantage. It was impressive stuff and Rowley was playing a sort of number 10 role linking up midfield and attack.

Bolton stepped up in the second half and we were under a lot more pressure.

Who you calling a fairy, lol.In my days in the 60s we had plenty of Italians and Poles who could look after themselves with their fists.

But Stucky only had one shot to save. Our defence were brilliant, its just a pity our forwards couldn't put their chances away, theynwould have been buried by ht.

Certainly was still being used. Mr Whelan (Reggie as in RSM), used a leather strap on the palm of your hands, didn't half nip. It was the same at St Mary's junior school, only this time it was a nun with a wooden ruler. Hooray for a catholic education.

First saw him in a reserve match early this season I think it was and it was obvious he was a cut above. Hope to see a lot of him next season.

Will he last the season though or will he be touted about just before January if he can make them a few quid

Thats why he has been put on a pro contract now rather than wait till the end of the season

The longer the contract the more we can get if the bids come in

And if a transfer fee goes to a tribunal again the longer the contract the more the percieved value he is to us is taken into account

In fact DA might see Rowley as his next golden ticket rather than the expected Ched Evans
