A computer expert running the academy ? Mmm!

I reckon a computer expert could programme a 3 man defence properly!

Wow! Is this the first time they've admitted to an actual 'error'?

I agree completely, Mitch was a big loss to us and the comment of 'Caldwell is said to have been surprised at the lack of a scouting network' is yet another question mark over what CT was supposed to be doing?
Water under the bridge now that he's gone but you can't help but shake your head as more and more things emerge.
It's not the despair. I can take the despair. It's the hope I can't stand.

You need a good coaching team and a strong scouting network. We have 3? coaches, including GC and no scouts. Think we'll see a thinner squad and a bigger back room staff next season
Here we go again!

I still find it hard to believe we as a club had no local scouting network at youth level- incredible

Is this now turning into a sack the coaching staff and employ an IT expert to run the youth academy? Am I living in a parallel universe or something?

He will run evening coaching for lads of all ages who may be chosen for Mark Smith's Academy. Trouble is, rumours abound that Mark Smith's Academy for all kids under 16 is being closed, so all younger kids will have to be carefully convinced to remain loyal and not sign on for anybody else.

Hi first time poster usually just keep an eye on the site since my grandson joined the academy but unfortunately with everything going on at the club the one consistant positive has beeen the official Chesterfield Academy which is doing a wonderful job at developing young talent however it never seems to get praised and gets dragged into the rest of the mess.

I previously held a role at Barnsley academy for a number of years and can assure you there are a large number of boys who had multiple optionswhen it came to signing for an academyclubs but due to the great environment created at our academy by the three full time time Lead Coaches all A licence by the way Mark,Darren and Matt they selected Chesterfield.

There are club scouts across all age groups headed by Kev Wildes and there are boys from Chesterfield area to Nottingham and up as far as Barnsley across the 9-16s.

I genuinely feel if anything was to happen the official academy it would be another major nail in Chesterfield with no youth set up of quality the life goes out of a club. I can assure you the boys in the academy will have no shortage of offers from other clubs and to throw that away when the club is so close to consistant bringing players through of a level I'm sure the club has not seen before.

You only need to look at the invite only competitions abroad some of the teams have been invited to in the coming weeks to know clubs are taking notice of the good work. If anyone was ever in doubt of the value of the academy I would simply urge them to come watch some of the age groups and enjoy the quality that is at the club.

I think it's a good indicator of how much Ashley 'loves this club'.

The cash flow situation points that that is a logical target.
God I hate this league.

But it's not as simple as that, Dave.

Has Mark Smith's academy received all the FA grant money it was due? Have they been responsible for any of the supposed 'reciprocal' payments to the scandal ridden DS? And if so, why? Why would a club with it's own facilities and equipment spend tens of thousands of pounds using someone else's? Why were losses at the official youth set-up singled out when those elsewhere were somehow tolerated?

And of course shouldn't costs associated with running Town's junior teams be offset by the lads who've come through?

All this might be nothing more than a self important crony opening his gob after too much hospitality.

But experience tells me to be suspicious.

Your concerns may have foundation, as I KNOW CFC academy players have been touted to bigger clubs. I was informed over a year ago that the academy would likely drop to a cat 4, which as I uunderstand means players of only 16 plus.

It will be sad if it happens but it probably makes senses in the current financial pickle.

And therein lies the problem. The outgoings bill has to be cut - it's about the only thing everybody from the top down agrees on. The trouble starts when you have to pin down the details. AC has got rid of the only person that he could lose without anybody getting upset - all the cuts from now on are going to hurt somebody, and people are going to squeal.
Reduce ground maintenance costs by using outside contractors: charge a charity for the stewarding when you've lent them the ground. Nasty businesses, both of them, part of a crack-down on spending, not something to endear the management to the fans, but probably a taste of what's to come.
To be fair, people can't lambast the club for losing money all the time, and then crib because things are cut that happen to be part of the organisation they like. Yes, we'd like a youth set-up, but is it cost-effective? Damn near impossible to tell, but it hasn't made a lot of money in the past, and any really good youngsters are likely to be poached by bigger clubs anyway; but if it did turn up a new Kev Davies it would have paid for itself several times over. Difficult decisions, but in the end it comes down to money - carry on over-spending and we won't just lose the youth set-up, we'll lose CFC.
It's going to be a rocky ride, but if you're critical of the way money has been squandered in the past, as we all are, we have to be constructive in suggesting where cuts can properly be made, and not just have yet another go at the management for trying to get costs under control. The past is irrelevant, the money's gone, we hope some proper business management can get things back on a sound footing, but it won't be an easy ride, and people are going to be upset.
