Maybe I'm reading too much into the wording but if at the moment "there's no substance to the bids" why is he saying "I'm really hopeful they're good enough to come back and open some talksl" instead of hoping they come to something?

Perhaps it's a cynical ploy to try and sell some more season tickets.

Yeah, it's funny he says they have no substance. Wasn't that the reason he apparently forgot to tell the fans about the Swedish Consortium's bid, because it wasn't serious enough. Yet he's now telling us about another two bids, both so far not even at the stage the Swedish lot were, but apparently worthy of telling people about, again just after season ticket details have been published.
If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything!

I wonder if Mark Smith should be worried.

Carson has seemed to place inordinate emphasis on how much the official academy is costing on several occasions, meanwhile someone who might be dubbed a 'crony' of his has apparently been boasting in the lounges that he's soon gonna have some sort of involvement.

One thing the last couple of years have taught me is to usually expect the worst on Sheffield Road...

Following the demise of the Development School, it seems to me that the opportunity to supply Mark Smith's Academy with suitable youngsters should be given to all local Schoolboy coaching establishments, all of whom can be a friend of CFC. I was speaking to Andy Morris on Friday evening. He is attached to one such, and is surely able to offer better coaching than other establishments. Let them compete with each other on an equal footing to get kids in the Academy.

In the `old days' long before coaching academy's the club's scouting & recruitment tentacles stretched, via the education authorities into all local schools, and young players showing potential were monitored from U13 schoolboy teams to U16 in a series of `Chesterfield Boys' teams, and the `gems' were invited to the club for trials. We also had a network of local amateur `scouts' monitoring the local Saturday and Sunday leagues for young talent and reporting any strong recommendations back to the Chief Scout at the club for further investigation.
Does any of this still happen - especially the link with the schools?

Andy Morris' involvement with Espial is partly (or maybe fully) funded by Derby County on the understanding that if there are any players with talent then they have first refusal to bring them into their academy. We really should have these sorts of deals in place.

I recall all that.
However there's a piece in the BBC site, that reports that Manchesters United & City are trawling locally in their area for kids as young as three! That is, not long since they have learnt to run.

Are there any kids worth having that aren't associated with a bigger club? Seems to me that we should be concentrating on those lads who are cast away by such clubs, I can't see they will be found in local weekend football any more.

That's the Rochdale formula.
God I hate this league.
